Magnolia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article refers to the plant. For other uses, see Magnolia (disambiguation).

The natural range of Magnolia species is rather scattered and includes eastern North America, Central America and the West Indies and east and southeast Asia. Some species are found in South America. Today many species of Magnolia and an ever increasing number of hybrids can also be found as ornamental trees in large parts of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The genus is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol, from Montpellier. See Origin of the name Magnolia.
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae dating back to 95 million years ago. Another primitive aspect of Magnolias is their lack of distinct sepals or petals. The term tepal has been coined to refer to the intermediate element that Magnolia has instead. Magnolias are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Giant Leopard Moth.
Magnolia grandiflora is the official state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana[2]. The flower's abundance in Mississippi is reflected in its state nickname, "Magnolia State". The magnolia is also the official state tree of Mississippi

Hi, Tom,
what a pretty shot. I love magnolias and you have done a fine job presenting these beautiful pink blossoms. I love the dappled lighting and the different shades of pink in the flowers. Very nice capture!! Warmest regards,
Shelly

Tom this shot of magnolias is very nice. The colours is very natural and even the shadows on the ground look very nice. Good, clear and clean shot. Your note is also very informative and interesting to read. Thanks Tom.

Roberto

Hello Tom,
A nice close-up shot of these beautiful pink flowers that contrast well with the grassy background. Very nice lighting and excellent rendering of the tones.

Very nice colors and light-shadows play, I like the pink tones and the texture of those beautiful flowers. Excellent framing.

Hi Tom.
That is May, with wonderful and lovely colors and wake up us from winter "sleep"?-:)
Cheers
Evan

Magnolia are one of my favorite flowers. While living and working in Switzerland I had a huge magnolia tree in front of my office windows and got several inspirations while looking at it, specially during Spring ;-).
You captured the colors very nicely, but the composition and sharpness could be more elaborate.

Hi Tom,

Wonderful glimpse of Spring. I especially like the way the frame works here (fancy me saying that) .. I like the way it makes me feel like I am seeing this through almost through a window and draws my eye into the image.

take care,

John

Hi Tom,
A nice close shot of this wonderfully coloured plant-one of my faves, but the flowers don't last so long in northern England.
Nice picture & notes again Tom.
Regards, David.

Hi Tom
Such an encouraging view, after the long winter season!
Love the diagonal disposition of flowers and the pastel colors. From this high point of view, pink matches well grey and green colors.
Take care.

Hi Tom,
You've made stunning progress with framing; this is just lovevly with the cluster of blossoms and their shadow on the grass below. The excellent sharpness really enhances the picture. HLJH, Pat

beautiful pink colors of these magnolia specie- the one that i see often without leaves while in bloom. they are always an envy in spring-
the petals are so clearly and sharply captured. their shadows appear very nice and attractive.

ps- i planted one this year (like in february) but i think i did it so early that yesterday i noticed the branches are dried-up...sad!
