Ring-Billed gull in Island Harbor Park Mamaroneck New York.

Harbor Island Park is often described as the "Jewel of Mamaroneck." Its waterfront location is in one of the loveliest protected harbors on the Long Island Sound. Its sweeping vistas, central location and proximity to the Village's main shopping district make this vital resource a magnet for our community.

Year round, residents of Mamaroneck and the surrounding communities are drawn to the park for athletic events such as baseball, soccer, tennis, boating, and fishing; community events; the enjoyment of nature; and just to have fun.

Anyone who has attended a Saturday soccer game, taken a springtime walk in the park when the vibrant cherry trees are in bloom or who has gathered for the annual 4th of July fireworks knows the exceptional value of this 44.5 acre resource.

The town of Mamaroneck was purchased from Native American Chief Wappaquewam and his brother Manhatahan by an Englishman named John Richbell in 1660. During the American Revolutionary War in 1776, the British loyalist William Lounsbury was attacked and killed by a group of revolutionaries led by John Flood. Several other skirmishes occurred that year between loyalists and revolutionaries. Famous historical figures who lived in Mamaroneck include Bishop William Heathcote DeLancey and novelist James Fenimore Cooper. It was in Mamaroneck that James Fenimore Cooper wrote his first novel, Precaution. American artist Norman Rockwell attended secondary school in Mamaroneck, and donated one of his paintings to Mamaroneck High School. The painting now hangs in the school library. Noted Broadway actor and choreographer Wayne Cilento lives in Mamaroneck. Actor Matt Dillon is also from Mamaroneck. In 1910, the course at Winged Foot Golf Club was constructed. The Golf Club was the location of the 1997 PGA Championship and the 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984 and 2006 U.S. Open.
