Another shot of the beautiful Monument Valley National Park, one of the things I liked best about the trip. This is the view of one of the most famous rocks of all, but unfortunetly I forget the name of this one, the names of the rocks are Indian names and they are very difficult to keep in mind. Monument Valley is definetly one of the places you simply have to see, I was very impressed, all these colors, but also a lot of green you see there. When we were there, we had more than 100°F, but they told us, they even have snow in the winter, of course not that often, but sometimes, one of the things I really couldn`t imagine. But that really got my attention, now I want to come back and make the shot of the snowy Monument Valley. The Valley is accessible by car, you can take a self guided tour with your car or you can choose to take a guided tour, we chose the self guided tour and I was very glad about that decission since we had AC.
But you can only reach every part of the valley if you choose to take a guided tour, even though the main rock formations are accessible to everyone.
So I hope you like this one!

I was there in march... there was snowing!
Incredible!
Nice pic and fantastic colors and POV.

Hey Mark,
schöne Farben und super POV, könntest vll noch etwas nachschärfen (kommt wahrscheinlich vom komprimieren).
Sonst echt schöne Kompo,
grüße Kris

Hallo Mark.

Hi Mark,

It does not miss any more that the cowboys and the Indians in the landscape and the illusion is perfect !!! It is true that this American desert is superb, they always also impressive these rock formations. I am allowed a small WS to give a little more light, I hope that you will like.

With all my friendships and a very good evening,

Jean-Charles

Mark,
Another beautiful image of Monument Valley, one of my favorite place. Very good composition with one large mitten in the front and other smaller one in the back. Technically, it can be a little sharper. there seems to be too much of the red or purpil filter or color overlay to it. You may want to adjust the color a little bit. Otherwise I like it overall.
Way

Hello Mark,
You had done very well on your us trip postings which composed them beautifully in each and everyone!
this one is no exception with good pov, balanced of colour and details
well done and keep it up
take care and my regards
Tony

Hallo Mark,

Excellent picture of this landscape. Very good composition with a good framing. Beautiful rock formations. Excellent sharpness, light and colours.
Georg

Hi Mark,
Crisp details and deep rich colors, but seems maybe the sharpness isn't quite right, or depth of field? Nice to look at thought so TFS. Gerald

Mark: color, composition mimic codachrome - although your superb compo lacks some sharpness. regards, c

Hallo Mark,
spectacular scenery of course, and a good upwards visual progression from one side to the other although a horizontal symetry would align it better with our reading fro mleft to right, only thing I have a small concern with is the sky, I think working selectively on it would improve it and the view but no time for WS today.
Have a nice day JY

Hello Mark,

This dynamic composition is appealing to my eye, an attraction that is strengthened by the wonderful warm colours!
Good angle on the impressive structure, that for sure is a climbing challenge...

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Mark,
Just put a comment on your brother ;-)
First impression...to much magenta and not sharp. Seeing Way his ws and it looks much better. Oeps, just seeing that Linda writing it's sharp...does she really means that? ;-)
But a great composition. Not easy to bring something new from a so well known place, always difficult to find something new. But i like this in how you set this up with the Mittens dominating the frame.
Regards, Henk

I am looking at your image with interest as we are going there in September. I like the way you have framed the image with the Mitten on the far left. Balance is achieved with the other formation in the background on the right. Looking at the WSs I think the apparent lack of sharpness is just to do with what happens when down-sizing. Try making a separate layer to sharpen and then you can add as much sharpness as you need on most of it and erase from the layer any parts that are too sharp. Flatten the layers before saving.
Kath

Hi Mark,

the colors are just amazing and an excellent POV too!

This formation is named the East Mitten Butte. "Mitten" coming from the English word for a glove with no fingers. In this case it's the left hand, (which reminds me of my home state Michigan, but that's another story). There is also a West Mitten Butte, almost a mirror image of the one you captured so well, which looks like a right hand glove.

A butte (has nothing to do with your back side!) is an isolated hill with steep, often vertical sides and a small flat top, smaller than mesas, plateaus, and tables. Buttes are prevalent in the western United States. The word "butte" comes from a French word meaning "small hill"; its use is prevalent in the western United States except the southwest, where "mesa" is used instead.

Here's some trivia:

The Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey features footage of Monument Valley. This footage is used as the surface of an alien planet to which protagonist Dave Bowman travels through a stargate. (source: wikipedia)

Bet that was more than you wanted to know! :-)

Well done, Mark! Looking forward to more great photos.
Thanks,
Linda

Mark,
Peter

Hi Mark
You present us a stunning secene today. Those rocky structures seem huge. Very good details of them. The sparse green grass and little trees make an excellent contrast with this orange and brown sand.
Best regards
Denis!

Hello Mark,
thank you very much for visiting my post and gave a very useful tips, guides and comments. Also not forgetting the WS. It helps me a lot. To me youre going to be a very successful person in this field because youre knowledgeable, skillful and full with potential.Thanks.
As for your photo it is really great and brilliant. Everything is fine, saturated colours, well balanced, great composition and perspective too. Only in your case the smoke left by a jetplane is still visible. That cant be helped. But as for me, Im a bit careless and maybe a test to criticizers about my shadow in my shot. :)
Your work is great and excellent.

Regards,
Foozi

Excellent shot of the famous rocks in North America. i like your compo here making us feel that the rocks guarding over the extent of the place. Great shot, i only found it not at its best sharpness, must be due to compression.

Hi Mark
Great image of these rock formations.
Amazing shapes and size of these formations are brilliantly caught.
Nice positioning of the subject in the frame.
Your note is very informative. Thanks for the image and the note.
Namaste from India

Hallo Mark,
Classic, but always stunning! Great compo and colours!
Regards, José.

Good photo of a wonderful place. The colors are very good. So warmth... I can almost feel the heat. You composition is good (although I would like to see just a bit more space on the left) and the light too. A nice one.

Bonjour Mark.

Ce paysage est un classique des westerns et pour tant il est toujours aussi beau. J'ai bien aimé le WS de JCG qui désature les couleurs.
Jacques

Hi Mark
Hope your holidays are going well in the States, beautiful shot of Monument Valley. The reds are awesome as is the composition. A very long drive to get to this place but it was well worth it here. Look forward to some new captures from the US.

Jim
