I've been interested in the problem of representing fog; ironically, though San Francisco is known for it, we had a lot more fog on the Pacific NW trip (where I didn't want it), and never enough fog here whenever I was prepared to shoot some of it. Yesterday, I finally had a chance to capture some (though even then it did try to run away from me).

Land's End is the northwesternmost tip of San Francisco: A cliff about 150 feet (50 meters), more or less, above the Pacific Ocean, with crumbling rocks offshore - in fact, a lot of it looks like some of the more dramatic parts of the Oregon coast hundreds of miles north. It's dramatic enough on a sunny day, while the fog turns it mysterious (not to mention cold).

Technical: Lots of adjustments, including some layers work, finishing off with B&W conversion - I think it works better that way for this shot.

Hi Daniel,

Impressive results.
To shoot the misty moods is an ardous task..
The composition, giving a look from the clif , to the sea and rocks is interesting.
To make this compact enough to reveal the misty nature is a success in frame.
You have done well.
Congrats, dear friend.

Hello Daniel,
The black and white is an excellent choice here...adds to the foggy conditions more dramatic feeling...
Very atmospheric work for sure!

Greetings,
Thomas

Hello Daniel,
The pov is excellent to have this lovely coast covered with fog! and a good choice to have it in a B/W format to brings out the special atmosphere and mood in that area!
many thanks for the sharing
my warmest regards
tony

Hi Dan,
I appreciate your B&W choice for this one, I think it perfectly suits the mood of this location. A truthful, well framed composition. This is how remember the Northern Coast in occasion of my two trips out there, in Oct. 1995 and Sept. 1997, all the way up into Oregon.
Misty, moody, cold, yet absolutely wonderful.
Have a good weekend, see ya soon.
Fulvio.

Hello Dan,

The fog in B&W, I haven't seen this in a very long time, and indeed I haven't been to Land's End since the last four decades. The mood this image creates is one that I remember well. What I like very much here is the vertical format, accentuating the verticality of the scene, but then presenting that amorphous fog, the surface of the sea completely obscured.

Warm regards, Dan. Are you final plans set for the trip East?
