Awesome day you had Peter, I am guessing it was before the fires blanketed you with smoke. You have done a great job capturing the scene from the northern hills there, great color and and detail for sure but you have chosen a fantastic pov, it works perfectly.

Hi Peter,
This one is fantastic with the romantic fog lifting over the iconic bridge and crystal clear turquoise Pacific.
The vivid blue sky and mystic fog contrast wonderfully with the colorful foreground of this fantastic POV.
My daughter will be visiting SF and Yosemite the second week of July and I will have to show her this one.

Hi Peter,
This is a very nice view of this famous landmark. The bridge spanning across the emerald looking water is a strong focal point. The fog does the trick of creating a more dramatic view from such a high place. I have never been to this place but would love to see it someday...I just wonder what is the sharpening process you do to your images. Cheers :-)

Hello Peter,
You've captured that one view which anyone who sees can never forget. As an inhabitant as the most city in the United States, you've probably seen this very site in different degrees of fog shrouding it. I will take a look at the different "capture," as I would never be able to get enough of it. Superb shot, scary note!

Hi Peter,
Wonderful composition. This superb bridge seems to try to hide itself, first behind the rocks, later behind the fog.
Great light on the foreground and the blue part of the sky strongly contrasts with the cloudy part.
Beautiful harmony of colours!
What a pity for your camera... of course, it is worth thinking it could have been worse ;-)

Hello Peter,
fantastic play of the clouds hiding the city, cowering it like a pillow. And the green tones in water are really nice, the place you have chosen to take the picture from is great, it emphasizes the size of the bridge's columns.

Hi Peter,
Oh man, a real shock when seeing these things happen...and now, still working in the proper way with some scratches?
I would start to complain about the sharpness till i read your note and the reply to roberto. the foreground looks indeed not that good in sharpness.
But look at the scenery itself, man what a view, what a great cloud formations over the bay. I have bene many times to SF but never been up here...don't ask me why, but next time i will..!!!
The dark blue on the top left is caused by the polarizer, some might say it's to much, but i like this effect, perfect contrast to that bright white of the cloud below it.
Pity about the sharpness in front, but hope you camera is still working.

Not bad, my friend, not bad...
I've seen so many picture od Golden Gate (all beautiful) but this has an original POV. Being from Switzerland and so used to climb mountains, you had the marvellous idea to get to the top where the view is wider. and you choosed the right day, with that low clouds that hide most of the city.
Among so many fine features I like the way the first pillar of the bridge sparkles, which enhances the contrast with the clouds and the deep blue sky.
Very good,
Donato

Hello Peter,
I had the same bad problem using a tripod in night shot with quite the same kind of damages you got. Same cause, same effect :-(
For the photo, I am very interested because I was in the same area but lower (the little hill close to the first pillar on your photo) 2 months ago. The weather was very different at that time and my photo also. The point of view you have selected is very interesting also with a better foreground than the one I got. If I go back there I will try this one also. Seeing this photo, I understand better why SF is called the city of the clouds.

Hi Peter,
Theatrical note. Good that nothing else got broken.
It's a great viewpoint. Fog is indeed impressive. And I like the foreground that has become your trademark. But somehow it bothers me that I don't see the point where the closer pylon meets the bridge deck. It leaves the bridge sort of incomplete.
Kari
What a shock indeed! Good job it was a sturdy Nikon and not that other flimsy brand errr...what's it called again? ;D I'm paranoid about that happening and often keep the strap round my neck at the risk of strangulation and/or ending up like Quasimodo.
I expect you could sit up on that headland every day and get something different. That huge cloud of fog coming in makes an excellent shot while all around the sun is shining. Good use of the rocks for some foreground. Well done

Hi Peter,
That's a fantastic view with great atmospheric conditions in spite of the wind (and its consequences!). The clear light and strongly saturated colours are very striking, looks like your polarizer did a good job. The foreground colours in particular contribute a lot to this picture. You can actually see how windy it is from the parallel lines of waves. The shadows of the clouds on the water contribute to the atmosphere and I like the way the road running along the top of the headland on the left creates a sense of foreground scale.
I'll be arriving in SF this Thursday and of course the Golden Gate Park is an area I'd like to visit (if only to photograph the bridge emerging from the fog!).

Hi Peter,
More of your magic!! ....in spite of that heart stopping moment. The colors are amazing, the bridge with only a bit hiding in the shadow and especially the shadow of the bridge on the water. That POV with the long view up the coastline really sets the bridge in its place more than any GG photo I've seen. As to any lack of sharpness, I find the detail of the FG entrancing, like a carefully-planned rock garden.

Hello Peter,
You have here a picture from a very well known site but the way you managed it makes all the difference.
These great contrasts and colors remind me of good old Velvia film which our friend Henk (Floydian) is very found of. The deep blue in the sky, the turquoise in the water and the brightness of the yellow flowers in the foreground are just magnificent.
As my predecessor, I would have liked some more sharpness on the foreground but I can understand your problem having read your response to Roberto.
You just have to buy a heavier tripod...
Hope your camera is still working.
Have a nice day.

It's incredible how this bridge is so alike the Lisbon bridge over the Tagus river. They are twins. :) I like your photo here very much. The light is great and so are the colors. Eventful story from yourself, it can get very windy in SF. The capture is first rate and one of the best I have seen of the Golden Gate.
Looks like you have glorious lighting which I didnt see for the three days I stayed there. The clouding around the gate is mesmerising with the greens and the blues complimenting the capture very well. The detail from the bridge looks first rate given the distance your away from it and the foreground adds to a interesting composition. Fine work, well done

but the view on the city here is too great to mourn the loss of intrigue for long, you have composed the photo masterly, I like a lot the contrast between the rocks in the foreground and fluffy [(C)] clouds in the distance. the colour of the water is almost too great to be true, it looks like an ice, and the red bridge is a cherry on this cake. fantastic! happy to make this post a three digit point-er :)

Hallo Peter,

Hello peter
Nice picture and interesting story!. Let me tell you an other. It was in united states, in 1984 year of olympic games of LA, where the russian did'nt come. At this time it was my first travel to usa; I was with evelyne and we get matrried one year later. We went in georgia and I remember the visit to okefenokee swamp and wild life place. Nere were no fog but walking on the warf I lost the obturator of the camera (ok, not expensive !). The alligators below take me off any idea to get it back!.
Back to your picture, the sky is beautifull and clouds perfect in the distance and well contrasting with the fog. The colours , specially of water are really nice too.

Hi Peter,
The colours! That's one of the most important ingredient in this delicious recipe. Of course, the whipped cream over the bridge is irresistible, allowing to see enough of the bridge, just enough to have our taste buds satisfied.
Like some of our friends have mentioned, the foreground might be a little bit imposing, but all these delicate details are very attractive. I would have had the same tough decision to take.
Cheers!

Wow! looks like I won't get tired of seeing this marvelous master piece over and over. I probably had seen this bridge from several direction and height, yet it gets more interesting day by day. Awesome capture. Clear and vibrant colors.

Hola Peter
encantado de saludarte de nuevo
la imagen es simplemente perfecta: luz, color, enfoque, profundidad de campo, etc.
saludos
buen verano
Hi Peter!
You were in the right place to get the city creeping from the clouds. The moment is awesome and the composition also very nice, with the bridge leading your eye to the clouds.
On the other hand, even though I've noticed you like contrasty scenes, in my opinion you had a bit too much (amateur opinion) especialy concerning the foreground. The contrast was already high (I presume it was mid of the day).
If you don't agree with me, we are ok, it's nice to have different opinions and discuss it.
Abraço.
João.

What a stunner Peter
You just keep producing one masterpiece after the other, I really don't know how you manage these wonderful clear colors and that very sharp look.

Hi Peter. This is quite a unique composition of the Golden Gate Bridge - some interesting elements in the picture which have created an excellent landscape photo. I would have expected better sharpness of the foreground at f/8 with this lens - but I guess that even on a tripod a very strong wind you will still get sufficient movement of the camera to affect the sharpness even at 1/100th. You were lucky not to suffer more damage to your camera - I hope nothing inside was affected.

Hello Peter, I just heard on the News about the fires near Yosemite National Park, one of the first things i thought about was you & your photos from this very part of the world, hope all is well. This is a fantastic scene with the romantic fog lifting over this famous bridge and crystal clear turquoise Waters. I like your POV, the FG contrasting very well against the blue sky.
Thanks

Olá Peter,
Beautiful fog city my friend.Whenever I see this magnificent bridge, I see also the bridge " 25 of Abril" in Lisbon. Excellent details, very well framed and done.

Wow Peter, this is a fabulous shot. Your excellent POV brings this scene to life, while you've also made good use of the clear light and dramatic clouds and fog. Great colour and texture in the foreground add to the over-all effect. Great stuff!

Hi Peter,
Great view of this well-know bridge, in an unusual POV, and very useful. It's true the foreground so bright and sharpened disturb a little bit, but I suppose is very difficult manage so different levels and lights in the frame. Anyway, the outcome is wonderful, mainly the background, the bridge and the city disappearing in the clouds... good evocation of Starwars! Very beautiful image, Peter. Thanks!
Greetings,
Angel.

Hi Peter
You saw more of the bridge than I did in the 4 days I was there. I like the wild rocky foreground which contrasts with the manmade structure and the difference in colour between the sea and sky. The fog adds lots of atmosphere.

Hello Peter
A view of the landmark which is so often presented, yet one never tires in seeing. The pall of mist rolling on to envelop the bridge, the famous red towers, contrasting with the blue polarised sky...quite amazing. I'm in two minds really about the inclusion of the FG rocks. On one hand it adds novelty to the image, but on the other I do find them a bit distracting especially with their bright warm colours..just my two paisa thoughts. Thanks for the link to your earlier image. That was grand!
With Regards

Great view, all you can see is wilderness, where is the city? It's all comfortably air conditioned by nature, including today. Great work.
I am participating less on TE nowadays because of server problems.

Hi Peter, I just love this shot and your chosen POV. The fog really adds to the overall mood and really gives a great scale to this bridge. I hope to see this bridge someday it looks amazing. Well done.

Hi Peter,
in my books this qualifies as one of the best Golden Gate shots I've seen in a very long time.
Perfect light management! Shadowplay and color are exceptional, perspective and view simply breathtaking.
After seeing this picture I'm really looking forward to California 2009. I haven't been in San Fran since 1995...
Awesome shot, my friend. My compliments!
Have a nice weekend, see ya soon.

Hola Peter.
I'm back home again after a wonderful trip to Europe, but at the same time quite behind in my critiques.
Here you got the Golden gate in a magnificent way, the way i wanted to see it with fog when we were in SF last May, but now i can enjoy it with your excellent shot.
Best regards my friend.

You know Peter, at LIsbon they have the same bridge and curiosly they have also the same 'problem' with the fog. This could be a photo taken there. I like the composition with the strong presence of the rocks at the fg. Althoug i might choose for a liitle less saturation. But that's a question of taste.
Best regards
KIKs
