The Colorado House is kind of an odd mixture of structures: originally a two-story hotel, it now houses the Wells Fargo Museum. Like some of the other buildings surrounding the square, this one is actually a reconstruction of the 1860 original. The hotel was built by Cave Johnson Couts, a lieutenant in the US Army, who eventually married Ysidora Bandini. One of their wedding gifts was a 2,200 tract of land where the family's home was built. Couts thus focused his attention elsewhere, leasing this structure in 1854. The hotel was renovated over the next 12 years, and eventually became the office for the San Diego Herald. It was eventually sold in 1866, but the original was destroyed by fire in 1872. The museum is a historically furnished Wells Fargo agent’s office, and displays one of the famous 30 Coaches shipped to Wells Fargo in 1867, a panoramic painting of San Diego in 1855, and a gold watch given as reward for care of San Diego treasure on a stagecoach.

According to its website, the earliest evidence of human habitation in the area of San Diego dates to about 7,000 BC, which is quite extraordinary, considering that the first human settlers in the Americas arrived about 11,000 years ago or so. Contact occurred fairly early in this area of California, when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo made some early explorations in the 1540s. The area which now comprises Old Town San Diego is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of California, as the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement. Junipero Serra also established the first of California's twenty one missions in the area. At the base of the large hill, a small community of adobe dwellings was established in the 1820s, and the village had been named El Pueblo de San Diego by 1835. The state Department of Parks and Recreation founded the Old Town State Historic Park to preserve the structures and character of the site, which includes the plaza, museums, and various other buildings.
