Photographer's Note

My sister, her husband and I went to Ballarat for its famous Begonia Festival. It was to be a happy outing, a chance for her to catch up with a school friend she hadn't seen since her childhood and for all of us to enjoy the charms of the town where we spent our teenage years after our arrival in Australia. My sister's school friend's brother was also a good friend of mine during our first years in a strange land. Each acted as our respective guides, translators and mentors, having arrived to this place a few years earlier.
We spent the whole day together, driving past places where we stayed as newcomers to this land.At dinner, in a restaurant by the lake, we continued our reminiscences. Then out of the blue we received news that my friend had died. He had been renovating the paternal home of his late father in Dalmatia, preparing it as a holiday retreat for his Australian family. He died in his sleep, alone. I had not seen him for decades as our paths did not cross for so long, but before the sad news, we were all planning for a surprise get-together when he was to return.

The sad lesson is- do not put until tomorrow that phone call, that visit, that gesture of friendship or affection, for tomorrow may never come and regret becomes your companion.

The following day we were leaving Ballarat and in the early morning as I walked around the lake, the photos I took were tinged with sadness and memories of my blue-eyed, gentle friend.
