Photographer's Note

I took this photo with my compact Pentax, on New Year's Day, 2005. It's a magical garden created in the middle of farmlands by an industrious couple in the middle of Nowhere, way up in the North East of Victoria. I was just delighted with the sight of this open gate and the blue hydrangeas in full bloom. The garden is open to the public and much of it harks to the European style, with little bridges over ponds full of lilies. One is aware all the time of its artificiality, but there is a certain magic about its incongruous location. As you can see here, it can convey the atmosphere of something ancient and tumbledown, with its little paths leading to small well-lit dells or shadowy glades in an almost fairytale way. It's a very simple photo but I like it.
