Photographer’s Note
This Pelican was found at Ricketts point, with Alfred (alftrek) and Steve (SteveH
Ricketts Point is a marine sanctuary on Port Philip bay in the south east surburbs of Melbourne. The sandstone rock extends from the shore and supports a wide variety of flora and fauna.
For some reason, maybe because of their similar colour, I insisted that this was a Penguin, but when it took to the air I was really confused, I had to admit to the others that perhaps it is a Pelican. This shot reminded me of the film storm Boy.
Storm Boy is a 1976 Australian film, based on the children's book by Colin Thiele about a boy and his pelican.
Storm Boy (Greg Rowe) likes to wander alone along the fierce deserted coast of South Australia's Coorong. He and his father live a reclusive life among the dunes that face out into the Southern Ocean. After a pelican mother is shot, Storm Boy rescues 3 chicks; he names them Mr Proud, Mr Ponder and Mr Percival, and nurses them back to health. His father, known to some as 'Hideaway Tom,' forces Storm Boy to release the birds, but Mr Percival returns. The story then concentrates on the conflict between Storm Boy's lifestyle and the externally imposed requirement for him to attend school, and the fate of the pelican.
Storm Boy's real name in the film is Mike -- the moniker 'Storm Boy' was given to him by Fingerbone Bill (David Gulpilil), an aboriginal man who becomes his friend.
The pelican, Mr. Percival died not very long ago. He was 33 years old.

Aveva 33 anni.

Ciao, Santo...
I am a MAD fan of bird photos and especially those in full flight. This is awesome. Perfect stop action, brilliant detail, perfect sharpness, marvelous light and exposure. I have only one small problem. The young lad going to the cinema. (Picking his seat). I find that somewhat distracting for such a great shot. Many thanks and kindest wishes,
Shelly

Hi santo: Is the the pelican Alfred was referring to as penguin? Beautiful in flight shot with so much exposed details. The eye is tack sharp and the plumage is so well focused. The boy adds interest in the frame and very well done indeed. Regards. Jusni

Hello Mr Girotto,
It is certainly very unusual of yout to post two consecutive wildlife photos, both of high quality. The "Penguin's" head is in sharp focus while the tip of the wings are slighly blurred to depict the movement. The image from that cheap lens is not that bad afterall. Just wondering what the boy was doing with his hand at his back, looks like trying to get his underwear out from between his butts. It is quite funny.
Regards
Alfred

Bonjour Santo,
Bon dimanche.

Ciao Caro Santo, I hope you're OK after your adventures in St Kilda! Great action shot, excellent clarity, colour and quick reaction. Sad to say, even to my bad eye-sight this one's a pelican, caro :) Excellent title, yes it reminds me of that book too, I think Colin Thiele wrote it?

Immagine ben costruita e piacevolmente movimentata.
Bravo!

Hello Santo,
This is a fine in-flight capture of the bird!
The pelican is nicely frozen with a tiny motion blur in the wing tips, just enough to count for the action...
Interesting composition with inclusion of the guy, excellent light on the bird..!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Haha...I am going to say it and the mods may take my critique off the website. The boy has got an itchy bum...
I think the picture is fine and I dont consider the boy as a distraction at all.
Thanks for sharing

Good framing and overall sharpness.
Swift hand and expert eye.
