Photgraphed this Carrawong whilst camping on the beach at Great Musselroe Bay in the Far North East corner of Tasmania. This bird was very flighty as it was protecting two young fledgelings and was difficult to get a good shot with my 300mm telephoto lens.

Black Currawong
Strepera fuliginosa

The black currawong is a robust bird with a hint of white on its flight feathers and the tips of its tail. It is alert and noisy and can be found throughout Tasmania.

Bushwalkers can testify to the bird's ingenious nature. Many have left their backpacks on a main track while they explore a side-walk only to find their backpack opened and lunchbox raided when they return.

The bird eats berries and other vegetables. Look out for the regurgitated seeds of the pink mountain berry - this regurgitation aids seed dispersal for the plant.

Nests are large and deep, comprising sticks and twigs lined with grass. It lays two to four pale grey-brown spotted and blotched eggs.
