Photographer's Note

A photo of the Point Lonsdale Pier, about 120km from Melbourne. This is the same place where I took my lighthouse photos, but this time the view is on the bay side, rather than the ocean side, looking down along the grooves in the rocks and the pier towards the point of land (we call these points the 'heads') on the other side of the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, called Point Nepean.

The waters here on this day seem calm and danger-free, but the channel for ships is narrow and has to be constantly dredged as the seabed is very shallow and a strong current is continuously being built up with more sand. Pilots must join each ship to navigate the channel between these two points of land.
