Lord’s, Wembley, Eden Gardens and Yankee Stadium are considered among the greatest sporting arenas in the world, but for history, pure drama and emotion, it’s hard to look past the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The ground was built way back in 1853 when the then 15-year-old Melbourne Cricket Club was forced by the government to move from its former site because the route of Australia’s first steam train was to pass through the oval.

Since then the MCG has established a marvellous history that compares favourably with any other in the world, hosting plenty of international cricket including the first-ever Test and the 1992 World Cup final, countless VFL/AFL Grand Finals, and the 1956 Olympic Games.

Other sporting spectacles that have been held there are Australian World Cup soccer qualifiers, rugby league home and away matches and State of Origin, international rugby union clashes and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Apart from its sporting events, the MCG has also witnessed many blockbuster music concerts, and even Pope John Paul II held a mass there when he visited Melbourne in 1986.

People from all over Australia, and indeed all over the world, speak reverently about the MCG, a ground that is as well known as any other.

Victorian sports fans can recount ample examples of games and events they have been part of at the ground, and it has a world-class reputation as a leading multi-purpose stadium.

Apart from the magnificent sporting contests it witnesses, the stadium also provides its visitors with world-class facilities, and has a collection which includes some of the most priceless pieces of memorabilia in Australian sporting history.

As well as a world record for the most people to ever attend a baseball match during the 1956 Games, the VFL/AFL Grand Final record attendance was an amazing 121,000 people for the 1970 decider between Carlton and Collingwood.

With the recent redevelopment of the northern side of the stadium complete, the MCG now boasts of a total capacity of 100,000.

Another fine feature of the MCG is its close proximity to the Melbourne Central Business District, with just a short train or tram ride required to reach the arena.
In this shot taken from the MCG car park shows the lights and in the distance the city skyline, namely the Eureka Tower.

Beautiful shot, wonderful sky with fantastic colours. Hope the Swannies were beating the Magpies.
Cheers
Peter

hi Santo

I see the wonderful streak of colored light across the sky that provided you with a good reason for this pov and you composed it with a mix of stadium, a modern highrise building and trees as silhouette. You must have spent a bit of time wondering around and searching for a good location for this shot.

tfs, bill

Hi Santo. Really nice. picture of "the G." The silhouettes are nice and create a good anchor for the skyline above.
Thanks for sharing. I have been away for a while and it was great to see
your picture show up on my TE alert.
Mark.

Ciao Santo,
cielo veramente suggestivo, che contrasta bene con la silhouette degli alberi in controluce. Un'altro tuo lavoro stupendo. Bravissimo.
Ciao

Hi Santo,
Brilliant late day sky with the rich golden colors so beautifully complimented by the late day blue sky and lovely white clouds.
A beautiful site to see from a seat in the famous stadium.
Regards, Tom

Hello Santo,

Very nice contrast picture with the red/pink colours to the sky.
The trees and towers care for a dark silhouette in foreground, this against a colourful sky.
Very well done, TFS.

Friendly greetings,
John.

Hello Santo,
Cricket is of absolutely minimal interest to most Swedes, but who cares in this case? This a fine picture where you have handled the darkness and sparse light very well and captured the red streak on the sky perfectly.
Best wishes,
Gert

Hello Santo,
Lovely setting sun sky over the MCG
very beautiful silhouette goes against the sunset!
well done and thanks for the informative notes as well
take care and sincere regards
Tony

Hello Santo. Very good combination of elements for a good image complemented by excellent notes. The stadium, the trees, the silhouettes and the sky are just in perfect balance in the frame. Very well done and best regards. Jusni

Hello Santo,

Sunset over the cricket ground, I wonder if that is symbolic..!
But then I look at the exif and find it is sunrise...
I like the diagonal cloud lit by the rising sun, and the sharp clear silhouettes!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Santo, splendid sunset with fantastic colors, great composition with lovely silhouettes, very well done, ciao Silvio

Ciao Santo,
una foto di grande impatto con molti elementi diversi fra loro ma molto ben mixati, eccezionale il risultato.
complimenti
Giorgio

What a wonderful sunset sky. I love the diagonal orange stripe. There is enough interest in the silhouettes to make a very successful sunset scene. Well done

Nice, very nice sunset, and of course near a sportfield, as it couldn't be of any other way! Santo, you're a sport maniac !

Have a nice weekend

Felip

Hello Santo,
The colors of fire are astonishing and contrast with the silhouettes. You tallied with research and care. The result is splendid. Your note is a complete and interesting explanation. Cheer.
Have a nice day
Cordially
Joël

Hey Santo,

That`s a nice photo - almost an "abstraction". Like the powerful colors and lighting, and the silhouettes of the stadium. The frame is also well chosen.

Best regards.

Hey,
A good mixture of man made and natural beatuy in this shots. The orange streak in the sky is very nice - good capture skip!

Dave

Hello santo,
I would say that the composition of the silhouette here is just as impressive as the colours of the sky. You have carefully composed the two elements together and ensured that the bold stretch of the colourful cloud is not interrupted. Thanks for including the photo info. Excellent work

Looks like the AFL game was underway when you took this shot. Feel sorry for your Melbourne Demons at the bottom of the ladder. My daughter and I are for the Magpies.

Take care
Regards
Alfred

Hi Santo. Definitely a sunset to savoir and share. Excellent colours and good sharpness. Well captured and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Bonsoir,
belle photo de ce coucher de soleil sur le stade qui lui allume ses feux pou éclairer un matche de cricket.
Bel ensemble, merci du partage.

Amitiés Thomas

Hello Santo
The sky colours look great, I was in Sydney the other week for a few days and was very impressed with the reds, oranges, yellows and blue hues Austrailia skies have to offer at sunset - Will be back soon with the camera in tow . The strong focal point is the stadium which really stands out, especially the stadium lights. Well done
Jim

Ciao Santo,
ottima composizione.
Cielo splendido.
Silhouette dei riflettori del Melbourne Cricket Ground a sinistra e degli alberi a destra completano una composizione efficacissima.
Buona settimana
Mario
