Photographer’s Note

Hi all.
I’ve been struggling a bit lately. Been on two trips away but have been disappointed with the results on my memory card on return, lots of soft photos with skewed horizons. The fact that they were fishing trips may have something to do with it though. I feel possibly too much concentration on “fishing” ;-). I believe I will have to make a special photography trip or two to stock up on suitable images to share.
Anyway enough excuses. This post is one I took on one of my evening walks with my camera and dog. The water is just a mud puddle left after recent rain but with the right light and right angle…..

Hello Paul,

A wonderful image with beautiful depth perception and graceful reflections. I wonder what a longer exposure time would have done with the lighting and contrasts. I may have experimented with several exposures. Nevertheless, this is as Jusni said, a well timed image of a great part of New Zealand. The clarity is flawless and the saturations perfect.

Hi Paul,
Obviously walking the dog mission works better for your photography than a fishing trip :)
This is a rather dark image that has an intensive feel. The colours of the sky and its reflection are subtle and beautiful, while the triangle created by tree silhouettes makes a nice element in the composition.

Hi Paul,
in that light the mud puddle is more looking like a nice lake because of the reflection of that beautiful sky. The trees as a line of different silhouetts work well and add dynamic to your composition. Very good colours.

Paul,
I know that feeling. If you want to take photography you have to concentrate and certainly not be diverted in your attentions from anything else. At any rate, this shot is excellent, despite the softness that actually matches extremely well with the pastel colors of the sky. The trees in silhoutte contributes a lot to complete the scene at its best.

Your mud puddle is perfectly disguised as a pond of dark and mysterious water in this evening light, with beautifull sky colors. A bit like in Cinderella's story, except that the truth will not be revealed at midnight, but most probably the next morming. Excellent sharpness again.

Don’t worry about the skewed horizons, as fishing justifies everything. Which type of fishing were you doing? The colours of the sunset are superb and the POV is very good. Well done.

I really like the way you set up this shot with the curving edges of the water providing a great frame for the reflection; detail and color are excellent as well.

Bonjour Paul,
l'ambiance est très calme, tiède, elle nous fait oublier la tempête qui vient de passer sur l'Europe et la neige qui est tombée sur notre pays.
J'aime beaucoup les couelurs pastels du ciel mais aussi les silhouettes des arbres qui se détachent avec force.
Excellent cadrage.

it is an absolutely relaxing and suggestive image, that inspires much calm.
I like the pink effect of the sunset light, the tones in the sky and clouds, the dark silhouettes of the landscape and evidently, the reflections in the water.

Hi Paul,

The black almost mysterious silhouettes give a beautiful graphical element on the picture. It gives the idea to be draw with ink on the background of a reflected sunset.
The result is lovely artistic.

Nice colors on this shot: nicely soft. The place of the trees in the frame allowed to separate the sky from the reflection and the shape of the clouds provided on other diagonal disturbing the ones of the trees. It is building a dynamic picture.

we all get bad periods..i just plough on!

the digital camera allows me to 'waste' up to 90% of my shots and still feel pleased
as you must be with this one...

Are you sure it was the fishing that caused skewed horizon ... or was it too much beer in the boat :) Sometimes it is not the number of fish caught that counts (or good photo taken) but the comradere that one enjoyed while catching the fish. You've got a lovely place up there judging from your past photos ... a lot of interesting aspects to photograph just like this one. Lovely tranquil scene ... just the kind of sight you want to finish a hard days work. Well composed with very good lighting management. Excellent work! tfs

this scene is one of my favorites. The timing was, in my opinion, the proper for capturing. The reflection of the sky on the water is very beautiful as well as the silhouettes of the trees around.
According to the exposure time I get the feeling that you used a tripod.

Colors are good and the detail is crisp, as for the composition it is good as well, especially the water surface stuff on the left of the frame, breaks up the symmetry very nicely.

Sometime we need only a mud puddle and good light; you, Paul was there in right moment to capture that lovely image. The dark trees compose very well with the color of the sky and reflection in the water.
