Mount Cook - Aoraki - 3,724 m - The highest mountain in New Zealand
I was travelling together with a Malaysian friend. We had rented a car in Queenstown and headed straight north towards this magical mountain. The clear, blue water in the lake surprised me. I had seen mountains before, but that blue colour was something unlike what we have here in Norway. The mountain was unfortunately covered by clouds, so we just got a glimpse of the glacier as we reached the dead end in Mount Cook Village. The sun was about to set at the time, so we started playing with the thought of parking the car at a viewpoint by the lake and stay there for the night. Let it be said, we're both adventurous people. Half an hour later, under a burning red sky, the car was set to rest. Cars came, cars left, and slowly, the clouds followed. People had told us the night sky by this lake was among the most unforgettable sights in this world, so we had hoped to see it.
About 2 am, the night sky was complete and it was indeed among the best. I just wish I had brought a warm jacket to handle the sub zero temperatures and enjoy the view. I may be a viking, but even we freeze.
The next morning welcomed us with this spectacular view of the first beams of sun shining upon the very top of the mountain. A truly unforgettable morning. Me and my camera didn't want to leave...

This photo has made my day. The road continues with the lakeshores serpentine shape, simply beautiful composition.

I'd love to drive along that winding road!
Beautiful picture, with special regards to the management of difficult light, soft colors and composition!

Ett ganska fantastiskt landskap med slingrande väg, snötäckta berg och sjön. Inte mycket sämre än Schweiz - eller Norge. Det var nog värt en kall natt att få se detta och ta en så snygg bild.

Nice to see your photos again.
Beautiful landscape dominated by the snow-capped mountain. Your composition trully gives it justice with the road leading the eye towards Mt Cook.
I spent a couple of nights in a campsite in Glentanner almost 10 years ago and drove along this very road. :-)

So even Vikings do freeze. Interesting.
The landscape is awesome and not just the view of the majestic snow peak. It's a very beautiful coastline.
You present us this wonderful picture in an excellent composition with the winding road on the foreground leading us to the highest mountain of New Zealand.
Best regards, Paul
