Photographer’s Note
Hi all. These are the McLean Falls in the Catlins, Southern NZ. The Catlins is famous for its wild and natural landscapes but unfortunately we only had one day to explore them, yes very bad planning ;-(. (There’s always next time.)
About 10 minutes walk from the car park down into the lush bush you are confronted by these beautiful falls. There is also a second set of falls about 5 minutes further on but not as spectacular as these. There was not quite as much water as we’d hoped for as it was quite a dry spell, especially for Southland!
Enjoy, Paul.

Hi Paul,
The water looks more than enough to me to render the photo very beautiful. I imagine that it must not be that easy to adjust the exposure in this situation, but one doesn't even remember that by looking at it. Wonderful compo also.

Hi Paul,
Beautiful water fall image, I like the long exposure, giving the smooth and milk like effect on the waterfalls. The tone are rich and colors adequately saturated but not over done. Very natural and beautiful. The canopy of vegetation and dense forrest give us the essence of the place and the tenacity of life. Thanks

Hi Paul,
Perhaps you remember one of my previous comments about the "brown" landscapes of NZ, that were unexpected for the "green image" that I have of NZ (I was never there).
So, today you present a view that I expect from New Zealand: a green place with much water. And you captured very well that water, in a beautiful "form" (the falls).
Greetings from hot Portugal (summer's here),

Hi Paul, I like the composition in this shot, picking up the details in the FG and taking the viewer back towards the falls - only problem is that on my monitor it has a slight blue cast. I did a WS to adjust. cheers, Steve

Hi Paul
The falls are nicely framed by the trees. I can see this was a difficult lighting situation. To get that ethereal look to the water the FG leaves are out of focus because of the wind I suspect.

HI Paul,
There is always a nice feeling of cool fresh air around a waterfall and you've captured this atmosphere perfectly. The silky water, the moss on the rocks and trees, the various leaves and sticks plus the little ferns all picked out in superb detail. Lovely composition.

Hello Paul,
What an astonishingly beautiful view. I've always heard of the magical land that is the South Island, specially for the rugged mountains and glaciers. Your photograph puts that magic on display. In 2001 I was scheduled to sail from Sydney to Auckland, then to the South Island — serving as a special topics lecturer. Unhappily, it fell through when 9-11 occurred. One day I may again try to do, my interest rejuvenated by your photos.

HI Paul,
Hope this finds you and yours well.
Great point of view .. I love the sense of dimension .. that overhanging tree ... seems just the right amount of water for 3 seconds .. very nice . it is too bad about the lack of stillness on those leaves .. I am speaking as a complete hypocrite here .. but I often take a fast exposure with the idea of layering it with the slow exposure to fix spots like that .. I rarely have the patience to go through with it though .. beautiful image .. I like it a great deal.
take care,
John

Bonjour Paul,

Hello Paul, I took a photo of a light house for the first time recently, the other thing I wanted was to take a some shots of waterfalls, I have been several times near home but there was very little water flowing (much less than this). I like this, natural colours, well use of hanging branch to frame it, nice light & FG with it's silky water & greenery.
Thanks

Hello Paul
Like how you framed this image. The waterfall has been framed by the overhanging branch of the tree, which spans the breadth of the frame. Like the effect of the slow shutter speed on the water especially in the FG. there seems to be slight breeze as evidenced from the leaves in the FG. Not an easy place to set up the tripod I would imagine! Fine work!
