Mangatoetoenui Stream Photo

Photographer’s Note

Hi all. This is Mangatoetoenui Stream which flows from Mount Ruapehu to the Tongariro River.
The desert road (State highway one) crosses this stream just north of the summit on SH1. There is a rest area (lay-by) here which allowed me to safely stop and explore the area a little. This shot was a bit of a balancing act, I was perched on a rock midstream when I took this shot!
A couple of bonus shots in WS also.

Ahhh, very refreshing picture you have there, the flow of water is very apparent in the choice of slow exposure time, a balance between too fast and too vaporous like what you have here is sometimes hard to achieve except by trial & error ;)

Very nice shot of this stream and well written note, well done. I guess the water must be cold. It is a picture of a lot of action, well composed with perfect sharpness and DOF due to these stones in the middle of the stream. Well done

This is just the kind of situation where I would end up in the water - camera and all! You don't mention a tripod so I assume this is hand-held, so balanced precariously on an icy rock you managed to keep still!! I like all three images, but agree you chose the best for the main post. As well as the motion of the fast flowing water you also captured wonderful light on darker water and wet rocks.

wonderful sharpness on the stone for suspended precariously at 1/30 .. the image has much more of a sense of peace than the taking of it .. nice management of a wide range of light ..

It is difficult to make a choice between the three images ;)
Yes, those wet rocks look very slippery and it seems you had a very steady hand! There are nice light/shade contrast and I like the smooth(BG) and milky(FG) texture of the water.

Even a small waterfall can make a fine subject when well handled behind the camera!
Good diagonal movement in the frame, nice play of light and shades...

Thanks for the troika of shots...all are fine. Thanks to the shutter speed, the speed of the gushing water has been well captured along with the foam. The low POV makes this interesting. I liked the zoomed shots in the WS as well, especially WS1

Hello Paul, You must have had wet feet after this lovely shot. Nice close look at the water as it runs over the rocks, the slow shutter produced a nice silky look. Good colour, contrast and clarity. A love spot close to nature, well captured.

This picture is doing extremely well, because of this eye-catching fast flowing stream. You have captured it perfectly, good sharpness, lighting management, and good exposure to soften it just slightly. Considering there was no tripod, I am impressed.
