[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
White Island (Whakaari) is about a 1.5 hour boat trip from Whakatane and is New Zealand's only live marine volcano.

For a number of years prior to 1914 sulphur was mined on White Island, but a collapse of the crater wall in that year overwhelmed the encampment and killed 12 miners.

The crater is going through some major changes at present and once the crater lake rises another 1.5m it will overflow and cause some radical changes to the way that it looks at present. I hope I can go back again one day to check it out. Normally the crater lake would be quite shallow, maybe only 1-2m deep, but due to larger than normal rainfall and erosion of the walls of the crater the water has risen at much faster rate and is much much deeper. The crater lake seen in this photo is actually the largest that the lake has ever been in the recorded history of White Island.

I've tried to capture the steam as it blows over the edge of the crater, quite an effort as most of the time all you can see is just steam and have to wait quite some time for a clear shot.

You can see another shot of the lake taken by "amanda" (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Oceania/New_Zealand/photo2379.htm) this shows the lake level much lower.

Great shot! Nice color and atmosphere!...
Well done!!
Take care ;]

Interesting view of the crater lake. However the picture does'nt tell everything by itself; The photographer's notes are helpfull but not complete. This photo leaves a lot of questions unanswered... (Jean-Pierre)

Great start buddy. You have captured the marble effect of rock well with a nice sharp focus. I keep expecting to see a red man with horns and a pitchfork in amongst the steamy smoke.

Hi Sean, you have posted a real good one for your first. White Island, a place not many get to see, and you show it off amazingly well. And your notes are very helpful too, thank you. The colours and details are very good, and it's nice and sharp too. Well done.

This image conveys the stark belligerence of this environment very well, it leaves us in no doubt that there's some places we don't belong. Not especially beautiful, but highly informative.

Great shot Sean. I have visited White Island myself many years ago and taken a lot of pics. Yours really captures the essence of the place.

Power of Mother Nature...Awesome shot my friend:)

Very strange atmosphere in this picture with the rocks and the fumes. Well done on composition and exposition, great work Sean. Good note too.
