Hi all. We recently did an overnight trip to Lake Taupo and it rained solidly for the entire time we were away, except for the half hour we detoured up Mount Ruapehu.
Even then we had showers and strong wind, the chill factor must have below zero!
This is typical scenery on the main highway side of the mountain and is where the road gets its name; Desert Road. Vegetation is sparse and stunted due to the alpine environment. In the BG are the Kiamanawa Ranges.
Enjoy, Paul.

Hello Paul,

Strong ambiance here, it makes a big part of the interest of your photo and illustrate well your note.
Moreover, the composition is nice with the vegetation in entry point and many lines of the ground driving the look to the mountains in background.
It makes me thinking about the Iceland landscape I saw recently.

Yves.

Hi Paul,

I thought I was looking at giant porcupines! Nice landscape with excellent colours and details. The view convey solitude very well and the contrast of colours works fine. Nice framing of this wild landscape. Thanks Paul.

Roberto

Hi Paul, I like this very much, i think part of the road up there is called the Desert Road isn't it? Good use of subject in the foreground, exactly as Ron Yue the National Geographic photographer (look him up on google) who spoke at the Sony do here a while ago. Good colours. TFS. Murray.

Hi Paul
Strange grass in this ureal landscape.
You create a very interesting athmosphere
Well done
Bertrand

Good morning Paul,
for sure this is a stunning atmospheric landscape; the dramatic sky have divided the compo in 2 sessions where the colour of the earth really stands out. The vegetation in the fg is important to add depth and leading the eye through the compo. Colours are beautiful as well as the excellent quality you delivered here. Thanks for sharing it.

Igor

Hi Paul, A good use of the hedgehoglike bush for s strong lead in to the image, it has great texture... The color tones also look fine and natural.
Nice framing with just enough of the stormy sky...
Greetings
Laurent

Hi Paul,
It's amazing desert landscape. That half spherical bush is well placed foreground detail.
I remember this region from my own journey to NZ. We drove around the volcanoes but never saw them due to clouds. I don't think it's not too cold for plants. It must be the soil that makes these desert conditions. Maybe it can't keep moisture, or is chemically unsuitable for richer vegetation.
Kari

Hi Paul - desert and heavy sky, a winning combination that you exploit very nicely in this one, congratulations, Daniel

To me, it happened exactly the opposite. By Lake Taupo was a glorious day and when we went up to Mount Ruapehu it was raining and miserably. The sky is very dramatic and beautiful at the same time. The arid landscape really cries for some good water. Well done.

Yes, this is the typical scenery along the Desert Road and you had captured well with good depth in good colour and superb details! I loved the colour contrast a lot!
well done and have a great weekend!
p/s thinking paying Ruapehu a visit in the next two weeks, how is the photographing opportunity?

Hi Paul,
thank you for this post indicating the lonely life of plants and the sparse coverage of this alpine terrain. Very good horizon and furthermore a beautiful cloudy sky!
Very clear and sharp image!

Hi Paul

Whatever explosion created Lake Taupo, must have affected the world climate globally for years. Good sharpness & composition on this desolate volcanic landscape. Tfs!

Hello Paul,

I notice the furry heaps scattered all over the landscape!
Otherwise a hostile appearance, with sparse vegetation and very exposed to wind...
A fine composition with a good division sky/land, and the heap in front is an eye-catcher!

Greetings,
Pablo -

- Another superb typical view on your wonderful country, the feeling of loneliness and of rougher of the place is impressive, beautiful but extremely wild, anyway, bravo and TFS!
Have a good weekend also.

Hi Paul,
There is a great depth of image in this composition, The desert landscape has a strong contrast with the cloudy and threatening sky, and this vegetation that splashes the ground is very interesting graphically.
I like the result of the whole set.
Great shot.
Best regards,
Josep

It's great to see some of your country Paul. I have wanted to travel there for a long time. I really like the layers of land and sky and the slight diagonal slopes in this image. The grasses make for an interesting FG.

paul

beautiful image, the shapes of the plant and the shapes of the clouds produced a nice view here despite the bad weather. This landscape make me remember the highfields from Bolivia but in that ones the weather is ever dry

Hi Paul,
what I really like here is that almost strange combo
of natural light - overcast with low clouds in the FG and
sunny down on the horizon.
Not much of a land, quite bare... but with a good compo
and placement of elements of interest in the foreground,
you created a very good landscape. In a way it reminds me
of our local NY Moors.
Cheers,
Robi

Those storm clouds look menacing, yet the foreground light seems fine with plenty of contrast. Your low POV works well on this strange-looking grass plant. Nice colour tones.

Hi Paul,
Wonderful detail and light management, the golden plant and the cloud detail mitigate the greyness of the day. Well done!!

The soil and the plants remind me a lot of the top of Haleakala, a Maui volcano; although Haleakala is the tallest mountain in the area.

Hi Paul! Nice light here and great stormy cloud formation in the distant sky. This turf background is nice. I would just had shifted a little to the left to avoid that clipping between the two objects in the right. That half green plant should be entirely visible or not visible at all. Try to scan your frame for clipping objects before clicking the button. ;) Nice one.

Paul,
I love how intense the colors are after the rain, The whole lanscape is well saturated. Hi Paul,
What a strange place... Almost like a different planet. Grasses look like creatures more than plants. I specially enjoy the colors of your photo, it has subtle beauty. You were lucky to catch the sky in such a dramatic moment. I wonder if trimming a bit of the top of your photo would help the composition... Hmmm, not sure but perhaps...

What a difference from your last post! The landscape is as beautiful as it is stark. It's intriguing how that bush on the centre manages to keep green.

Paul,
I love deserts. Something that I learned to appreciate since I live in California. The arid environment with its light provides an uniqness in photographic possibilities that always fascinates me. You seem to have some interesting samples in New Zealand too. Something surprising for my stereotypic understanding of Kiwilandia. Absolutely wonderful plant in the foreground, although it bothers me a little bit that it obliterates the viwe of the green bush in the background.
