Photographer’s Note
This photo was taken as part of our Chile (and Argentina) trip in April 2007.
When we came to the glacier we took a trip on the boat. As we aproached the face of the glacier the sun broke through and shone on the ice while behind it clouds obscured the mountains.
This photo shows well the varied structure of the ice, the deep colours and the imense size of the glacier face.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentine Patagonia.
The 250 km² ice formation, of 30 km in length, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile. This icefield is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating.
The terminus of the Perito Moreno Glacier is 5 km wide, with an average height of 60 meters above the surface of the water, with a total ice depth of 170 meters. It advances at a speed of up to 2 m per day (around 700 m per year), although it loses mass at approximately the same rate, meaning that aside from small variations, its terminus has not advanced or receded in the past 90 years. At its deepest part, the glacier has a depth of approximately 700 m.

Yo Hauke!
Amazing position to find find yourself in! You can really get a sense of how large these things are! I really like the strong cold blue colours coming from the ice and then reflecting off the water and the grey sky. Great stuff.

this is how I've always imagined the kingdom of the Ice Queen would look. excellent shot, Hauke, the blue light on the top of the glacier looks as if it was artificial, very interesting contrast with the rugged face of the glacier. perfect light and colour management, nothing is overexposed, but still light and crisp.
best,
Kristine

Hello Hauke,
Wonderful image of these glacial cliffs which provide an interesting and textured view of their beauty. I know that Arginitina is very far south, but for some reson I have never associated glaciers with this country. The lighting and colours are perfect and overall a very good result. Well done.
Cheers Grant

So its true what the documentor of Ferdinand Magellan, Pigfetta, wrote about the glaciers in the Patagonia approximately 500 years ago that the ice's color has a beautiful blue tint. Ferdinand Magellan named the natives of the area 'patacones' because of their big feet and later gave the regions its name Patagonia according to Antonio Pigafetta.
Very sharp photo...Thanks for sharing!
