Photographer's Note

Route No. 40, runs across Argentina North-South.
The Southern section of this route, in the province of Santa Cruz, is a lonely route where you can drive hours without crossing anybody, and gas stations are many hours away from each other. The route is not paved, that´s why i measure time rather than distance...
We had a 9 hour trip from El Calafate to Lake San Martin, and the only living creatures we met were:
1-an ostrich,
2-a family of "Guanacos",
3-these beautiful horses, looking up with curiosity,
4-many "condores" (vultures) (Condors are the largest of the birds of prey), beautiful!
5- a Belgian Couple who was coming on a motorcycle FROM SANTIAGO, Chile, to Ushuaia!! impressive!!
Whoever you are lucky to meet on this route has a special story to tell, most tourists are the hard-core adventure type, climbers, trekkers, campers, (photographers!) and the like...
and there is ONE stop which is obligatory: La Leona, it serves as post office / police station / hotel / bar / and looks exactly the same as 100 years ago, rustic and pitoresque... very simple. By the time you get there you feel it is an oasis in the desert!
