La explotación de las minas de Potosí, el rápido aumento de su población, la fundación de la Villa, la vida y peripecias de la misma y la fama universal que cobró en muy poco tiempo, es una de las historias más fantásticas de entre las muchas historias de las Indias. Aunque la fundación oficial de la Villa tiene fecha de 1561, comienza a poblarse con toda rapidez desde el momento mismo del descubrimiento de sus primeras vetas, hasta el punto de que, veinticinco años después, por 1570, se dice que la población ascendía a más de 120.000 almas provenientes de todos los confines de América, de la Península Ibérica y de muchos pueblos del Mediterráneo. Según un censo levantado en 1611, en esa fecha "los habitantes de la Villa llegaban a 150.000 que vivían en una extensión de dos leguas a la redonda, ente familias nobilísimas, indios y españoles de todos sexos (Pedro Vicente Cañete y Dominguez, 1787) (Carlos Prieto - La minería en el nuevo mundo - 1968).

The explotation of mines in Potosi, the rapid increase of its population, the foundation of the city and its universal fame is one of the most fantastic and outstanding stories in the history of the Indias.
Although the official foundation is dated 1561, the city started to grow very quickly soon after the discovery of the first veins. In 1570, only 25 years later, the city counted already 120.000 inhabitants from all parts of the Americas, the Iberian Peninsula and many places around the Mediterranea. I like your perspective of this village.It lets us have the notion of the dimension of the mountains behind. It's also sharp, with nice colours.

I really don't recognize the cathedral of Potosi in this photo, the landscape is so strange. Are you sure ? I remember that cathedral had 2 towers.. Maybe it is a very strange POV. Anyway I liked the photo, the buildings surrounded by the cliffs

Lovely composed panorama with excellent use of the forground' ancient buildings. The idea of excluding sky and of the frame was very proper to focus sight on this exceptional environment so tightly surrounded with the mountains. Great Work.

Hi Eric,

a very original & dark idea to go back in time a little;-)...one can spot the fine structure of la Casa de la Moneda on the left...hard to believe but some of the rocks in the backround were a misfortune for many living or forced to move there during centuries...fine crop...i think the tower belongs to the San Francisco church...cheers, arturo

Salut Eric,

Excelente POV, interressant comme la ville parait enferme dans les montagnes! En ne conaissant pas l'endroit ce difficille a dire, mais il me semble qui tu a bien saisi la relation de dependence de cette ville avec ses montagnes du sort tout sa richesse. La perspective nous laisse avec le gout d'en voir plus de la jolie achitecture colonial.

Bonjour Eric,

voici une vue différente de Potosi. Mais j'aime bien... Le choix du format panoramique permet d'"écraser" la ville dans les montagnes. Le blanc des constructions du premier plan donne également une touche de lumière agréable.
