Maersk Line, a photo from Parana, Sud

Photographer's Note

The Port of Paranagua is the seaport for the Brazilian state Parana's capital, Curitiba. Located on the Paranagua Bay at the foot of the Serra do Mar, it is a short 29 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean.

Port History

The first settlement began in the mid-1500s on the island of Cotinga, but it was little more than a base for exploration and searching for gold. In the 1570s, Sao Paulo residents won the land bordering the Taguare River from the indigenous Carijo and established a village there. People continued to come to the early Port of Paranagua hoping to find gold in the area. In 1585, Portuguese explorers officially founded the town.

In 1640, a military government was established in the Port of Paranagua under Captain Gabriel de Lara. In two years, the village won the status of a town. The Province of Parana and its Port Authority was established in 1854. In 1880, the railway station was built, bringing additional commerce to the city. Today’s Port of Paranagua was officially established in 1935.

By the middle of the 20th Century, the Port of Paranagua was a thriving commercial center based on the export of soy, coffee, hides, paper, tea, beans, cotton, plywood, bananas, and sugar. An oil terminal was constructed in the 1970s, further enhancing the port’s important role for the state of Parana.

In 1872, the transformation of the old port began to be replaced by more modern facilities. Brazil’s federal government granted the right to develop the port to Jose Goncalves Pecego, Peter Aloys Sherer, and Jose Maria da Silva in that year. The concession was transferred to the State of Parana in 1917. Construction of the modern port began in 1926, and it was opened in 1935. In 1949, Brazil’s government officially assigned management of the Port of Paranagua to the State of Parana.

What a fabulous point of view and such impressive, almost eerie colours....

I may be biased by a love of humungous ships and the sea but this is an especially good photograph - really well done!

An excellent view rich in colors in the sky ... but too in the sea thanks these nice reflections. The bota is very well located between the coloured sea and the coloured sky. Very good photowork.

Oi Carlos, uma imagem com uma atmosfera poderosa, muito bem apresentada no formato panorâmico. Tudo parece bem aqui e o grafismo dos guindastes a lutar com as nuvens é muito interessante. Gosto da linha azul do comprido barco e da textura da água, se bem que a tonalidade das nuvens é o que chama mais a atenção. Um belíssimo trabalho.

seeing a boat at a brazilian harbor reminds me about a Christmas long long time ago when newly started sports club in "Rio " decided to take the color of the first ship that entered the jetty and that ship was Swedish so the color went Yellow and Blue and the name of the club... Boca Junior

every port i go to, i see maersk line ship but, yes they are just humungous ship that i for one wound't think of capturing an image of it. however, this one is espcially different as it sits there against the golden colors of nature, and you captured this moment splendidly! Feliz Natal.

Uma excelente marinha, com ponto de vista e enquadramento muito bons e um pp fantástico, criando profundidade e impacto. Particularmente, gosto da temperatura de cor e layer adjustments que deve ter aplicado: avivaram a foto, no que concordo com o Fulvio. O semi-silhuetamento também ficou ótimo, parece até uma foto de pôr-do-sol baixo feita com bracketing ou nd grad (como não disse nada e a dizer pela iluminação do céu, creio que o sol ainda estava mais alto, ainda iluminando o casco do barco). Os reflexos na água completam o quadro.

Almost unreal luminosity… but very beautiful light. A postprocessing successful and thank you with the polarizing one. I see that I have missed some nice posts, I'll start with this one.
I like a lot the dramatic colours, no question about that. the sleek body of the ship seems to mirror the cloud formation above it, and the combination creates a very strong sense of direction and movement, I like that as well, I find it fits the idea of purpose-full sea-faring. the textures of the waves in the foreground are great as well, nice one :)
