Paratodos

Two deserted high rises. The Mercury buildig (left) and the St Vito building (right). Shot from one of the delivery entrances of the spectacular Mercado Municipal in downtown Sao Paulo.

The St Vito might be called a vertical favela and was build in 1959 evicted in 2004 due to the detoriating condition of the building and its social problems.

The ambitious plan to revitalize this low rent building and get the evicted people to return after that under the "requalificar nao gentrificar" adagium didn't came true due to funding problems. When the municipality eventually decided to the tear the building down last April (2007), it was briefly invaded by 320 people. The military police used force to get them out. They were members of societies of homeless people.

Favelas in general are bidonvilles (shanty towns) in the peripheries and in the centre of Sao Paulo. One of the most infamous innercity favelas is right next to the spanking new Microsoft high rise. Sao Paulo is the city of sharp contrasts.
A vertical favela is an (abandoned) high rise where homeless or otherwise poor people have taken up residence. Often without water and electricity. Some are very well organized – those are cooperations that even provide rudimental education and childcare.

In the WS is a pic from the Banespa tower with the Mercado and the two highrise in the right upper corner.

This one was shot a day before we travelled with Isabel to Bahia – Porto Seguro.

Paratodos is a a wonderful album and song of Brazilian singer, actor and author Chico Buarque (1994).

PCS2 tech: corrected for lens distortion (Pt-lens plug-in) and perspective distortion, cropped, altered the contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, enhanced the colour- and luminosity edges and surfaces, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Hi Bert,
This skyscrappers are something, and if I'm not wrong, I've found some like this a few years when I visited Havana. I can't imagine the living conditions inside the vertical favelas.
How was walking around São Paulo with the photo camera? Was it safe?
Take care
Fred

Hoi Bert,

John.

Wow !! Impressive background building. Looks like an unhuman world. Very strong and very sad... You were talking about thoughts...
Stéphane

Hi Bert. Good illustration of this urban space, and one more example of how you are able to include architecture into your photography in a way that it adds a graphical and/or rhythmic aspect. A good documentary photo, I think. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Bert,

I suppose that the tall building is the main is sort of the main subject here., but your inclusion of the wall of smaller buiding the tank lorry and people add both perspective and makes it very vivid. I think you have done an excellent job here. Have a nice week-end!

Cheers,

Ulf

Hi Bert,
Superb use of the vertical format. You have nicely contrasted the cropped portion of building on the right with the incredible highrise, which appears huge, bulking and geometrically imposing. I like the foreground action with the people and HIDRO tank. The clarity of detail and sharpness here is impressive.
John

Well used backdrop for this daily lifer, well framed, lots of interest.

Hej Bert,
Al die raampjes van de flat geven een prachtig effect hier. De witte lijnen in het gebouw maken een mooi raster. De lijnen op het andere gebouw aan de rechterkant werken ook nog eens mee. Het 'daily life' doet het goed in de voorgrond. Uitstekend werk, goed gezien!
Groeten,
Lars

Hello Bert!
Great composition!
Full of geometrical lines with scene in the dawn plays very well!
Perfect details!
Best regards!

Hallo Bert,
Prachtige foto met twee gezichten. De mooie eentonigheid van de gevel met de blauwe tankwagen als "counterpart".
Hierdoor is een boeiende compositie ontstaan.
groet Rob

In fact what you tell in the note could be a great story that together with the photo cause a great effect on me, making me think about what a strange creature human could be, but at the same time felling great about the survival capacity of all of us. I´m back to TE, take care Bert.

Interesting point of view of our 'favela vertical'. There is a lot of discussions about this building: some think about demolish it, other ones think about to restore it and use it commercially, but as we change our city mayor, they change their ideas...

I used to pass in from of this building everyday: it was between my work and my university: I used to work in a huge 'square' building of 'Itau Bank', in the same avenue. Maybe you saw it...

Regards!

Jáed.

Although abandoned skyscrapers are nothing new to me. We have quite a few in Detroit. Ones of this size and then inhabited as you describe are. And just looking at it it does look like a vertical shanty town. The wear and shoddiness of it all are visible right through it. I think I would have cropped this down to just the two buildings in the background and forgotten about any of the foreground stuff which is distracting. I think you have one like that over on Flickr, actually. Overall though I like that concrete and glass fill the image with only a tiny little piece of greenery popping up bottom center. And no sky is great. It's very dystopian.

Bert, great story and shot, good lighting and control. I think maybe you should return when the water truck is not there if possible. Besides that good conscience thanks for sharing. take care-
ciao.
