Photographer’s Note
The Place
This is the El Tatio Geysers. According to some reports, El Tatio is the highest geyser field in the world at more than 4,200mts of altitude. More info here.
Background
In 2001 I was assigned in a project in Chile, my home country. I had to supervise the construction of the base for the first radio telescope of the ALMA project (Atacama Large Millimetre Array) for the NAOJ (National Astronomic Observatory of Japan). You can check details of this very interesting project here.
The project site was almost 70 km from San Pedro de Atacama (altitude 2,450 mts), at an altitude of more than 4,800 mts (17,767ft). We had to go up and down to the site everyday. Although I lived in the middle of one of the top attractions of Chile, I had little chance to visit some of those places. Only the last weekend there I had the time and I could get up early (before 4AM) and drive to El Tatio, a wonderful place. I am so glad I was assigned here.. very lucky.

The scan quality is crisp and impressive, the scattered geysers give an otherwordly feel, maybe the sky is generous because it's empty, but the low light gives a pleasant shade of blue, and I know low level clouds are very rare. (I didn't get a chance to do this excursion unfortunately, it was because of the waking up early issue, but now looking back 10000km. away, I wish I had done it)

Hi Jorge,
fantastic photo of Atacama Desert. Incredible that it is from scan. It is a pity I had no time to see Atacama when I was last year in Chile. It is very interesting what you write about this ALMA project. I must read it one day. But at the moment I am very excited - I am Granny!

Hi Jorge,
A superb scan, really excellent. Full with detail, clarity and brightness, any idea what kind of film it was?
A strong composed landscape with very interesting subjects which are spreaded all over the place. Taken at 4200...man that's really an interesting landcscape. Another shot that makes me want to go to Chile one day.
The snowpeak mountains are also working great here...really a good shot.

Hello Jorge,
the ground thunders below these geysers, the magma should not be very far. It is a superb image, in an area which must be enthralling to discover. Congratulations for the image and also for your contribution to the construction of these extraordinary tools which are the modern telescopes.
Have a nice day

you captured a real fantastic phenomenon of nature in a very scenographic picture, the atmosphere and lighting are superb, you really managed very well here with a good glimpse of the barren landscape around, great colors and very interesting notes to go with this picture.

Hello Jorge,
I just read your comments about my nebula photo. Thanks. I did write a critique earlier and I commented about the radio telescope project that you supervised the construction of and then the Trek Earth server blew me out. I always hate it when this happens. Your notes are always well-written and informative and your shot is fantastic! 4200 meters in height, that is amazing. This is as high as our Colorado 14,000 foot peaks. I am also impressed with your career as an engineer and I am very impressed that they chose you to be a big part of this construction. This Alma project is a fascinating high tech marvel and who know what scientists will discover with this radio telescope (array of telescopes). Keep on posting your great photos and your interesting notes!

Hi Jorge,
I like the film that you used ... I'll go to church and get some :) Very good image quality considering it is from a scanned image ... must be because of the heavenly film :) This is indeed a very interesting scene. Must have been a good opportunity to work in a place with such interesting landscape. Well captured and composed. I also like your informative notes. Well done!
Cheers,

Hello Jorge,
Interesting, one would guess that geysers and other thermal activity would occur in areas that were at lower altitudes with a thinner crust, not up high in the mountains of Chile. Excellent clarity here and wonderful balance. The blue sky is beautiful and the white vapor looks pleasant in front of it. I love the earthy texture and colour below.

Bonjour Jorge,
