Day 86: Popayan, Colombia

Initially I wanted to fly from Panama to Venezuela but somehow ticket prices were outrageously expensive. Flying to Bogota, Colombia was about fifth of that price so I got there instead. Colombia was such a positive surprise – it has received so much bad publicity that I was expecting to experience problems and dangers but instead I got the warmest welcome during my whole trip. Other visitors were non-existent (another great thing :) and it definitely is much more secure than some Central American countries. I felt safe to carry my camera around my neck even during the night – something that I would not have done in many other places. Ok, not in Bogota but elsewhere. I was warned not to travel by night or cross border to Ecuador by land but I had no problems at all. Colombia is a country that I want to explore more in depth in the future.

This photo was taken in beautiful colonial city of Popayan. It also seems to be my 100th photo in TrekEarth :)

Dia 86: Popayán, Colombia

Deseé originalmente viajar de Panamá a Venezuela pero el billete de avión era muy caro. El precio a Bogotá era cerca cinco veces más barato así fui allí. Colombia era seriamente una sorpresa positiva - ha recibido tanto la mala publicidad que esperaba que experimentara problemas y peligros. En vez la gente era estupendo - probablemente más amable durante mi viaje entero. No vi los otros visitantes y me gusta de eso :) el país es definitivamente mucho más seguro que algunos países por ejemplo en Centro America. Me sentía seguro tomar las fotos incluso durante la noche - algo que no habría hecho en muchos otros lugares. Tal vez no en Bogotá pero en otras partes si. Me dijeron para no viajar por noche o cruce la frontera a Ecuador pero tenía ningún problemas. Voy a volver a Colombia en futuro para tiempo más largo.
