Photographer’s Note
Sterkenburg Castle was probably built in the middle of the 13th century as a moated round towerhouse, with 2,5 m thick walls, by a Gijsbert van Wulven. The Van Wulven family owned several castles in the region at that time. At that time the tower was lower then it is today. The castle remained in the hands of the Van Wulven family until 1456 when it came into the possession of a Wouter van IJzendoorn through marriage. It remained in their possession for the following hundred years. During their ownership the castle was rebuild; a square tower was added and a curtain wall was built along the edges of the castle island creating a courtyard between the 2 towers and giving the castle a polygonal shape. Also the round tower was raised with extra floors.
In 1565 Sterkenburg Castle was owned by Reinier van Aeswijn, who was married to the last female Van IJzendoorn descendant. He allowed a garrison of State troops to be quartered at the castle to protect it and the surrounding lands from the Spanish at the beginning of the 80-Years War. His son Antonie added a gatehouse to the bailey in 1626. In 1646 he left it to his nephew. This nephew however got murdered in the castle's woods in June 1647. This murder was never solved. The following decades Sterkenburg Castle changed ownership several times due to inheritance issues after a couple of untimely deaths.
In 1725 however the castle was bought by a member of the Mamuchet family. This family didn't live in the castle and it was rented out.
In 1741 the, by then decayed, castle was obtained by a member of the Van Westrenen family. The second Van Westrenen partially rebuild the castle's southside, opening up the courtyard demolishing the square tower and replacing it with a new wing on the old foundations.
In 1829 the castle was sold at a public auction to a PA. Hinlopen and his wife. They again sold the castle in 1848 to Karel Kneppelhout. He pulled down the entire castle, with exception of the round tower, and build a new house on the foundations. The round tower was provided with large windows and in 1867 he also added a square tower to the new wing. The present form of the castle is mainly the outcome of his rebuilding.
In 1978 the castle was again sold and its now rented out to private persons.
This one I took yesterday. There was a lot of wind east wind, a hard and cold one. Not good for a reflection but nice enough for a good atmosphere, I hope you like it.

Hi Jaap,
I agree, it is the atmosphere that makes this photo stand out.
Silverish tone dominating through whole photo adds to already superb sharpness.
Smart position of the stream uses its curving and leads the view towards the main motive, which impresses with the form gently illuminated by soft warm light.
Whole composition is so well managed and provides most excellent result.
My best,

Hello Jaap,
Very nice and unusual framing for this photo, with the castle in the middle. It`s a bit low-key and even if technically might not be very correct, the mood is very well defined.
As usually,an impressive note for which I thank you.

Hello Jaap,
This atmosphere is simply superb and I am sure that your mastering in post processing counts a lot on this superb result.
The composition is very bright and uses the wide angle perfectly.
The low light brings a sliver tone all over the landscape and a touch of golden on the castle just enhancing it in order to attract the eye.
Very nicely done!
Have a nice evening.

Hi Jaap,
very good atmosphere. There is some interesting grey tones which brings a nice dramatism to this scenary. Light is well controlled and the reflection of the calm river adds a lot to the compo. There is a little tilt to left which doesn't bother at all. Very well done!

Hi Jaap,
the atmosphere is really wonderful. It looks cold, it seems the leaves are a bit frosty. Nice view of the river or canal leading to the castle. I wonder how it is to live in such a castle with tower. I like this row of trees on the right side. Very beautiful scenery.

Hi Jaap,
It's impressive how with this dark light, almost "black" light, you reach this image soft and tender. I like very much your composition, the great curve creates a very strong perspective, and the soft light over the tower attract absolutely our attention. It's very beautiful, a pleasure!

As you remark, the rippled water hasn't given you the mirrored surface you like, but we can still see the reflection of the castle tower. There is a tiny bit of light filtering through the clouds illuminating the important parts of the image and the curving lines of the stream work perfectly to lead the eye into the scene.

Mooie plaat.

Hi Jaap.
Nice picture of this castle in a lovely winter light under that brooding sky. I like the trees hanging down into the picture. A little tilt to the right, but not important.
I wish you and your family a happy Christmas and New Year

Andrew

Hi Jaap,
Superb picture.
I've told many times but I REALLY like your square format.
The composition is perfect with this river who transport ours eyes to the castle.
I specially like the strong sky: have you use filters ?
Best wishes to you and your familly for 2009.
Regards
Yves
