Photographer’s Note
On the way to Mitta Mitta one day in November, last year, I halted not far from the small township of Tangambalanga, and just before entering the forests of the Lockhart's Gap road, to take a photo of this looming storm and the rainbow. Sheets of heavy rain fell from a dark sky on to nearby hills, but there were still areas of blue sky close by. A few minutes later I drove on, but found that I was driving into the storm itself, which by that time had reached the road you can see in the lower part of the photo. It tore branches from the eucalyptus trees and caused some small rocks to fall from the walls of the cuttings through the mountains. Within a few minutes more it had passed and before I reached Mitta Mitta the sky was clear and the air still. This area is about 300km from Melbourne, to the north east.

Hello Andrew,
An scene of two halves weather wise, makes for some very interesting light and shadow contrasts. The rainbow is beautifully rendered and I like the framing from the foreground vegetation, which benefits from a very nice light. Excellent sharpness throughout.

Every time I see a photo of a rainbow, and if it is a good photo of a rainbow like this one, I can't help telling a story about rainbows :)
I don't know how it is in your country but in mine there is a legend that says there's a treasure, a gold treasure, at the end of the rainbow.
I have observed that if you go hill after hill after the rainbow, you will never find the treasure, but after some time you will have gone a long way.
And if you don't believe in the treasure you will stay forever in the same place.
It is like all utopias :)

Hello Andrew,
It's interesting to see how the rainbow sort of splits the sky in two halves. "Inside" the rainbow the sky is evenly dark, outside there are still some lighter clouds and some blue sky. A strange effect. I also like the windswept yellow grass in the foreground.
Best regards,
Gert

You have so many elements in this shot. The dry, the wet, the sun the darkness, and everything is beautifully captured.
A great shot.

To take a rainbow it's not an every day task. It's good how you choose to take only the left half of it so that it creates a kind of diagonal. One can almost see the rain falling to the right while the sky is still blue to the left. Nice the yellow grass that frames the scene at the bottom. I guess you ran to your car afterwards...

Here we can really see the rain drops falling through the sun rays, that are reflected into one of the finest rainbows I´ve seen here on TE! Excellent colours, all of them...

Hi Andrew
Quel chance d'être là a ce moment particulier, j'aime comme l'arc en ciel sépare le ciel d'un côté plus de lumiére et de l'autre plus sombre, belle lumiére sur les herbes en avant plan, un tout qui donne de jolis contraste

Hi Andrew
A great photo of a looming storm. Two skies split by a rainbow. The light on the dry grass in the foreground is another focus. There is a lot of detail in this interesting rural scene.
We know all about storms in SE QLD - could be 2years for all the damage to property to be repaired - from one 45min storm in November.

Hello Andrew,
A stormy day with a bit of the luck of the Irish I'd say! I like the way you added the foreground grasses to fill space in the scene, it works well with the gray skies as it lights up a rather dull and stormy sky. Well done...

Hi Andrew,
There is a very interesting feel to the shot because of the many elements in there. The rainbow, the sky in a distance, the dark gloomy clouds and the dry grass in the foreground. All of these elements make the shot very interesting but I think that most interestingly, its the wide range of light which makes it more interesting, from the rainbow to the dark coulds and the well lit up f/g.
Thanks for sharing

Hi Andrew!
Great photo of this scenery divided into two by the rainbow. You were lucky to witness such a wonderful moment and you did well capturing it just at the right time!
The difference in the sky and on the hills, as well as the sunlit grass in the foreground give the best of effects.
A Happy New Year to you and your family!

Bravo ami Andrew,

Hello Andrew,
Scenes like this don't happen all that often, although it may have been a little hair-raising, what a great resultant shot!
The sky looks to belong to two different shots where it has been divided by the rainbow!
I'm so glad you were not tempted to brighten it. It's atmosphere is in the sinister light!
Lovely composition, as always.

Hello Andrew, I looked at this & thought as Steve did an excellent shot even without the rainbow, I think it's the golden windswept grass in the FG, but the beautiful rainbow is the icing on the cake, the sky on either side of it is very interesting & contrasting. Tangambalanga not sure where it is exactly, I like the sound of it.
Received your email, thank you.

Hi Andrew,
The division in the sky made by the rainbow is an asset to the composition. THe point of view takes pour eyes towards the mountains and the rainbow which is giving depth to the photo. The vegetation in the foreground and the trees in the middle are framing well the scenery. The presence of the cattle in the field has an effect of scale. The variation of the light is enhancing the colors. Happy New Year 2009.

My dear friend, nothing more wonderful to turn the page to start the year with an image like this. I hope you have a 2009 full of success and happiness for you and all yours.
A rainbow is a nod from God from heaven, no doubt. There is much to highlight, apart from the heavy shades of the same light, the way they've framed the composition with the bushes in the foreground.

Bonjour Andrew,

Hi Andrew,
what a dramatic rainbow! It's strange to see how it divides the sky in two parts... The foreground, IMO, is a bit too bright and catch too much the eyes. I would have probably crossed the road to see what it gives...

Bonjour Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
Yesterday, while going to the office, I was likely to see a splendid complete rainbow at daybreak, it was not multicoloured but with pink colours… and I did not have, unfortunately, my camera with me. I did not have your chance like here, very beautiful photograph with interesting contrasts, as well in the light as in the colors. I like much the composition, thank you Andrew.

What makes it extra special for me are the seeding grasses brilliantly lit and detailed- a perfect contrast to the ominous sky.
