Photographer’s Note
People who have visited Angkor know this image well, as there are literally hundreds of Apsaras carved in the walls of Angkor temples.
In Cambodian tradition Apsaras were angels, who represented heaven on earth. Each of their statues carved in stone is different - not only their faces are different, but also they vary in poses, gestures, hairstyle and other details. It is believed that each one was carved by a different man, and therefore they express their creators' individual images of angels.
Apsara tradition is still alive and you can see their performances in several places in Siem Reap.
