Photographer’s Note

A day of hard frost transformed the landscape into white. The canals in my hometown are frozen now too but at the moment not enough to do iceskating. Maybee tomorrow people will be able to do so on the Damse Vaart. It has been since 1997 that this was possible.

Here you see the Damse Vaart in Hoeke. The canal was an idea of Napoleon who had it dug from 1810 on. The goal was to enable the French military to move via a network of canals from France to the north out of reach of the English navy. The "Damse Vaart" was meant to link Bruges with Scheldt estuary but it was never completed. Due to the loss of the French (Waterloo), the canal was only finished till Hoeke (+/- the place you see here). The last few kilometers between Hoeke and Sluis (Netherlands) was only dug in 1856.

On the picture: although it was still forbidden (dangerous because the ice was not thick enough on all places), some daredevils risked it anyway.

Dag Hendrik,

Een prachtig zicht, mooi vastgelegd. Vooral goed is hoe het kanaal oneindig ver doorloopt, dit geeft een heerlijk gevoel van diepte in dit shot.

Ook de diagonale lijn van de witte boomtoppen rechts is heel knap.

Ik ben blij dat ik deze nog kan meepikken, u krijgt bijna de zelfde als week foto van mij, binnen een kwartier.
Ja, er werd geschaatst van Brugge naar Sluis volgens de schaatsers zelf.
Het is een schat van een foto best vriend, zo mogen er meer komen, maandag plaats ik eveneens dergelijke foto.

Superb composition to show the neat line and rows of trees in winter beauty. The POV is great. The frosty tree branches in the bright light looks very impressive in this landscape view. A nice touch for you to include the skater and making it much more interesting shot.

Je viens de voir la derniere photo de John, toi tu es sorti photographier un peu plus tard, le canal a eu le temps de geler, tres belle luminosite et superbe perspective animee par les skaters, tu n'as pas rate cet evenement !

This place is very photo-friendly and you have chosen a very good pov and have done a very good composition by adding those ice-skaters in it, making it livelier and even more beautiful!
Adequate sharpness and management of light!
Natural and nice colors!
I'd love to be them!
I would only cut off that red pole on the left, but nothing that might spoil the overall result of this image!

Bonsoir, mon ami Hendrik,
C'est une piste interminable pour les patineurs ! Une photo qui se regarde avec beaucoup de plaisir par sa "mise en scène" et par son intérêt lié à la nature du paysage. J'aime ces arbres poudrés de blanc.
Ces patineurs étaient là au bon moment.
Beaucoup de bonheur, de douceur et de sérénité pour la Nouvelle Année, ainsi que la réalisation des projets les plus chers !

This is a wonderful winter scene which provides us with an interesting reflection of how the landscape changes during this cold season. Obviosly here in Dubai, even our winter temperatures are around 15c at the coldest, and 25c during the day, so we do not have the opportunity to skate on ice! I like the line of frozen trees which dissappear into the distance. The two skaters adds some very good interest to the photo. Well done.

En dan ook nog onder zulke mooie berijpte bomen.
Mooie diepte werking en met de twee schaatsers in de voorgrond een fraaie weergave van de sfeer.

prachtige opname van het kanaal, met ideale weersomstandigheden voor fotografen. Kwam deze namiddag uit Brugge en wou even langs het kanaal rijden... file ! Een eind voor Damme moesten we een omleiding volgen tot in Damme en dan heb ik maar wijselijk besloten om niet terug richting kanaal te rijden...

Une bien belle photo avec ces arbres givrés. une belle perspective qui même notre regard à l'infini semble-t-il.
Seul le piquet rouge sur la gauche est un peu gênant et aurait pu être coupé.

Bonjour Hendrik,
les canaux et leurx eaux tranquilles ont évidemment gelé bien plus vite que les rivières. Un sport audacieux et risqué que de patiner dessus.
J'aime beaucoup ce givre sur les arbres et cette perspective fuyante qui donne de la profondeur.
Couleurs et lumières parfaites.
