This really is my kind of art: a nondescript rural Khmer pagoda in a small village, somewhere in the Mekong Delta, with those typical faded colours...

The dancing figure is called an aspara. These are supernatural beings, appearing as young women of great beauty and elegance who are proficient in the art of dancing. They dance in the palaces of the gods and entertain gods and fallen heroes.

Apsara's are said to be able to change their shape at will and are associated with water and with fertility rites. In Hinduism they are sometimes regarded as nature spirits who may lure men to their deaths!

Another shot taken in the village of the frog...

This is not far from O Mon, which is to the north from Can Tho. We visited it together with someone who was working in a farming project there.
