A Flag for Canada
It wasn't until the 1965 inauguration of the maple leaf flag that Canada had its own national flag. In the early days of Canadian Confederation the Royal Union flag, or Union Jack, was still flown in British North America. The Red Ensign, with a Union Jack in the upper left corner and a shield containing the coats of arms of the Canadian provinces, was used as the unofficial flag of Canada from about 1870 to 1924. The composite shield was then replaced with the Royal Arms of Canada and approved for use overseas. In 1945 it was authorized for general use.
In 1925 and again in 1946, Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King tried to get a national flag of Canada adopted, and failed. In 1964, Prime Minister Lester Pearson appointed a 15-member, all-party committee to come up with the design of a new flag for Canada. The committee was given six weeks to complete its task.
The suggestion for a red and white single maple leaf design for the Canadian flag came from George Stanley, a professor at Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario.
In his speech at the national flag inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Lester Pearson said:
"Under this Flag may our youth find new inspiration for loyalty to Canada; for a patriotism based not on any mean or narrow nationalism, but on the deep and equal pride that all Canadians will feel for every part of this good land."

Hi Tom,
A nice salute to the north and a very interesting note to read. Love the hard contrasting colours you found here. A real battle between the dark greens and the bright red in the middle, and both look great in this picture...excellent.

Henk

Lovely autumnal image with lovely light across the colourful middle band. The 'stripes' of this image could almost make a flag. Interesting note! Those pesky Brits eh? ;D

Hello Tom,
very good color contrast between the green in the foreground and the beautifully lighted shades of red in the background. The sunlight on those trees in the BG is also a good contrast to the grey sky above. Together with the interesting note a really great posting. Thanks.
Best wishes,
Helmut

Hello Tom,
A splendid composition of this beautiful and colourful landscape. The sky adds much to the mood and heightens the tonal contrasts. The vertical format is well chosen and I like the diagonal placement of the fencing which emphasises the division of the image into two different tonal areas.

Hi Tom
I love those varying tones and colours that can only be found in eastern Canada and the U.S. Thanks for the note about the flag. It seems Canada takes forever to accomplish some things but it was a proud moment in 1965 when the new flag was revealed.

Hi, Tom -
A really nice autumn scene, takes me back to the years I spent in college (Colgate) in upstate New York. Great note, too.

Brilliant chunks of colors, most informative and very interesting note, TFS! Wish you guys a wonderful weekend, I'll have unfortunately to work but plan to take it easier next week. And if the weather gives us a hand I might be off for a few countryshots too... Have fun, y'all. See ya soon,

Wow, Tom,
I love these dramatic colors you have here. I always kind of like shots with a dark FG and the brighter colors further in and you did that here perfectly and still with great detail. The grass looks wonderful and I like the little rope fence. The light in the center is fabulous and there is excellent balance to the shot. Beautiful shot! Many thanks and best wishes,
Shelly

Hello Tom,
An interesting note to accompany your wonderful photo. Excellently build point of view for adding a barrier from ropes and splendid contrasts between green and autumn colors that already increased the feeling of two parts. The lights at golden autumn colored forest is fantastic. If I'm not wrong the symbol in Canadian flag; The tree of maple leaf grows only in Canada and southern part of Turkey (Koycegiz) in same shape. Congratulations. Have a nice weekend.
Friendly Regards,

Hello Tom, You have used a nice image with lovely autumn colours to convoy a part of Canada's history to us. Excellent clarity & depth.
I can almost see an Australian flag there somewhere in their old flag, very British.
Thanks

Hello Tom,
The most striking feature is the light!
It creates the most wonderful effect on the leaves of the trees in the middle band, turning them to molten gold and amber. Amazing!
I love the diagonal composition and the contrast between the the layers as the eyes travel into the shot.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Tom,
what an interesting note to go along with this remarkable image. You got details in your note that were completely unknown to me.
The contrast and saturation of the different layers is quite unique. I especially like the strong orange and yellow coming out of the dark green.

Hello Tom
A great way to salute us! I like the vivid colours of the maples highlighted by the sunlight. Great contrasts and you did good by including the fence in the foreground. The sky seems a little bit dramatic. Many thanks Tom!
Best regards
Denis!
