Fiscal Island Photo

Photographer’s Note

Glittering like an emerald in the sea, Fiscal Island in Rio de Janeiro seems to have simply been dropped into Guanabara Bay. Roughly a kilometer from shore, Fiscal Island, once known as Rat’s Island, was entrusted to the Finance Ministry of Rio in the 19th century. It was in 1881 that construction began on what was to be a customhouse on the tiny island. The building that actually evolved and remains standing today, covers virtually every square inch of the island, leaving only enough room for a row of majestic palms around it’s foundation.

Now known as the Fiscal Island Castle, the building was initially to be somewhat nondescript, a plain governmental cracker box, if you will. Enter Emperor Dom Pedro II and those plans were immediately scrapped. Amazed by the view of the bay from the tiny island also known as Ilha Fiscal, Dom Pedro insisted that any building placed on the island must be a ”dazzling jewel” befitting what he considered to be a ”delicate jewel box.” Designer Adolpho Jose Del Vecchio set to work immediately and the resulting castle, inspired by the French buildings of the 14th century emerged seven and a half years later. Del Vecchio was awarded a Gold Medal for his design at the Escola Imperial de Belas Artes (Imperial Fine Arts School) Exhibition.

Built with the labor of slaves and the Portuguese, the Castle was finished and inaugurated in 1889. Dom Pedro II himself, boarded the famous Galeota Imperial to make the trip across the Bay for the inauguration. Also known as the Imperial Gallery, the boat is currently on display in the Espaco Cultural da Marinha in Rio de Janeiro.

Good timing with the aircraft at the right point,this island looks like a very magical place, as from a childs fairytale book. I like it although just a slight shade dark.

Mas eu que não ia querer ficar muito tempo ali, com esta rota de avião passando tão perto... ou é ilusão de óptica?

A iluminação no castelo ficou sensacional! E pegou no momento exato! O único defeito na foto é a companhia aérea mesmo, que pior impossível! Me recuso até a falar o nome, pra não atrair o capeta! Fora isso, belo trabalho!

The lovely castle on the sea and the jet linner stand out brilliantly against the hazy blue sky.
The plane is barely clearing the grand old castle that is seen in clear ture colors and excellent sharp details.
Love the long bridge and palms blowing in the wind.

I like surpising combinations like this. The aircraft is perfectly placed above the tower of that palace. Tall bridge in the background also adds to this odd composition. But this is tilted to right.

Quem é que colocou aquele avião lá???? Foi o Lucas! Ótimo timing para capturar o momento exato e fazer esta foto original. Mostrar a bela arquitetura seria suficiente, mas você foi além e fez da foto algo único. Estudou a cena ou pintou por acaso na hora. Muito legal!

O momento é único! Ficou perfeita, só me parece que a torre está um pouco inclinada, mas o avião está perfeito e gosto muito das cores e da nitidez. Até a arquitectura parece valer bem a pena!
Já vi que não pararam no fim de semana, não tenho perdido os Ws:)!

Vejo que tb. andaste à caça destes passarões metálicos no Rio. E valeu a pena! :D Além de ser uma excelente apresentação desse palácio com ares de castelo romântico no meio do mar, o pormenor no avião "preso" no bico do tecto está fabuloso.

haha, grande timming nesta foto, Lucas. O avião parece um catavento gigante daquele edifício. O resultado é cómico e algo surrealista. Provavelmente a inclinação do cais é natural, mas eu teria tentado endireitar à mesma.
