Photographer’s Note
The Carnival of Venice was first recorded in 1268.
Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival.
They were used also on many other occasions as a device for hiding the wearer's identity and social status. It would permit the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to interact with other members of the society outside the bounds of identity and everyday convention. It was thus useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters....

Hi Alana;
The f/1.8 has made for a great portrait with the shallow DOF (it really is a great portrait lens), however the composition I think could be better if you were to be move the person out of the centre of the frame (rule of thirds). In this case, I would have cropped tighted to the womans back and a bit from the top which in turn will bring the persons face (focal point) more towards a 'Rule of Thirds' intersection.
The Kodak website words it well; "Rule of thirds: In candid pictures of people, it's often wise to follow the traditional rule of thirds. Imagine a pair of lines dividing the picture into thirds horizontally and a second pair dividing it into thirds vertically. Place the most important visual element—usually the face (or eyes in a close-up)—on one of the points where the lines intersect."
I'm not saying this applies to EVERY portrait shot; but in this case I think it would have helped.
All the best,
- Dan

Hi Alana,
What a surprise, We did not see for a long time from you photo. The composition is superb, the lady's carnival dress are beautiful, the blurred building detail very nice, the colours are superb. Mysterious and elegant sight from the Piazza San Marco. Have a nice day!
George
