Málaga es una ciudad española, capital de la provincia homónima, en la comunidad autónoma de Andalucía. Está situada en el extremo oeste del mar Mediterráneo, al sur de la península Ibérica, a poco más de 100 km del Estrecho de Gibraltar.

Con 566.447 habitantes según el censo de 2008, Málaga es la sexta mayor ciudad de España por población y la más grande que no es capital de comunidad autónoma. Además, es la zona urbana más densamente poblada de la conurbación formada por el conjunto de localidades que se sitúan a lo largo de unos 140 km de la Costa del Sol y el centro de una área metropolitana que sobrepasa sus límites municipales abarcando otros 12 municipios que suman más de 850.000 habitantes.

La ciudad se extiende sobre una bahía rodeada de sistemas montañosos (Montes de Málaga). Dos ríos, el Guadalmedina y el Guadalhorce, atraviesan la ciudad desembocando en el Mediterráneo.

Fundada por los fenicios, Málaga fue una ciudad confederada del Imperio Romano y una próspera medina andalusí, que decayó tras su incorporación a la Corona de Castilla en 1487. Durante el siglo XIX la ciudad experimentó una destacable actividad industrial y revolucionaria. Escenario de uno de los episodios más sangrientos de la Guerra Civil Española, Málaga constituye en la actualidad un notable centro económico a nivel autonómico y un importante nudo de comunicaciones gracias a su puerto y aeropuerto.

Málaga es candidata a «Capital Europea de la Cultura» en 2016.

Founded by the Phoenicians, Malaga was an allied city of the Roman Empire and prosperous medina andalusí, that decayed after its incorporation to Corona of Castile in 1487. During century XIX the city underwent a remarkable industrial and revolutionary activity. Scene of one of the bloodiest episodes of the Spanish Civil War, Malaga at present constitutes a remarkable economic center at autonomic level and an important communications center thanks to its port and airport. Malaga is candidate to “European Capital of the Culture” in 2016.
