Photographer’s Note

Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning "circle", and Tibetan monks create these beautiful archetypal templates with grains of colored sand to remind us of the cycle of life and death.

Five colours are used; white, red, yellow, green and blue. These five colours are the manifestation of the five wisdoms of the Buddha. They are mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of discrimination, wisdom of equanimity, wisdom of reality and the wisdom of accomplishment.

The mandala take a week to create. Once complete, a dissolution ceremony is held. The sand is then swept up and poured into a vase. From there, it's taken to the water and given as offering to the spirits of the water, returning the sand to its beginnings; closing the circle.
The ceremony took place in Vilnius and was proced by four tibetan monks.
