Photographer’s Note
In late afternoon on 3rd day, we returned to Angkor Wat temple for another sunset. When monks show up, it always stirs interest because the orange robes in strong light is striking to the faded grey of the temple stones. So when these 4 young monks passed by, many photographers requested for a pose. Here they were facing the later afternoon sun, just before entering the temple proper. I mostly prefer not to have people in pose because they tend to be stiff and nervous. But for this day, monks are really hard to come by, so I could only take a pose from them. And I also prefer old wise monks than these young learners. I learn that you can become a monk without shaving your head and return to normal life after 3 years. One thing is interesting : do they carry wallets? Their food is from donation, so all they have as a monk will be a robe, slippers and daily given food. Interesting way of life especially in regions like Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Mynamar. Thank you for viewing.

Bill,
definitely not the most original composition. However, It still does it for me, I'm still impressed by them!
The light is way too strong to shoot at this time of the day...However, like you said, you take the occasion when it passes!
I'm really not a fan of partial desaturation, especially here we can see some colors that was not desaturated around the monks on the left.
This photographer at the bottom and that arm on the left is annoying a bit.
Oh, I loved Angkor, and I like your pic. However, I think it could be better.
take care,
Marc

Superb capture. Rich details and very sharp. The contrast between the monks' saffron robes and the surrounding structure leaves no doubt which the subject is.

Bonjour Bill
Un bel assortiement de couleurs entre les vétements oranges des moines et le gris du bâtiment. On dirait que les moines posent pour le photographe.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Undoubtely an appealing composition where the colour of the monk robes is enhanced by the desaturaton of the rest. I like also the light here which makes everything sparkles. A fine travel photo.

hello Bill
I guess that this place is very crowdy,as we can see an arm on the left and at the bottom, but we forget them very quickly with the splendid orange colour of tthe monks dreses, superbly enhanced by the sunlight, and also by the partial desaturation! This is very well framed,as we can see the wonderful sculptures on the top of the door!Very well done!

Hi Bill
I've been to these temples, & the colour is nothing startling, so it was a good decision to partially desaturate. I'd crop from the left to improve symmetry. Good sharpness & tonal range. Tfs!

Hello Bill,
This is wonderful one. Splendid contrasts after your skillful PP. I liked enviable clarity and sharpness while another photographer completing your scene perfectly. This is very natural and its hard to eliminate or crop it for me too. The light all over frame, especially with orange on them. Congratulations. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Bill,
A good effort at using a particular post technique to rescue this capture. For me there are a few issues that have already been pointed out by other critiques, most notably the photographer in the lower right. The other point for me is, I'm surprised you haven't equally spaced the columns in your composition, normally you are very attentive to this type of detail. To be honest with you, you have done much better work than this.

It looks like the stone walls are desaturated and that makes the orange monks pop out of the screen! Good timing to catch them in that position... The framing is also excellent!

hello Bill;
was it indispensable tio desaturate the monument?
what i like at most in your shoot is that we saw the other photographs (2 little parts of them...) and that is a posed photo; why don't you choice to swo us must part of the photographers?... an other POV but with your question from last day I thing it's in the same way...

I liked the idea of let the monks in color while the temple was Black and white, but I guess the contrast is very strong here, I guess it would be better with a little less saturation in the colorful area. Anyway it is a nice job. I liked the pose, it isn't artificial of hard despite they were posing. nice framinng, pov and colors. beautiful work

Hi Bill,
the combination of bright orange monks' robes and grey/black/white background makes it a very bright and interesting image. The orange colour emphasizes the sunshine and the bright day! especially as seen against the almost black bg, inside the temple.
Concerning the monks' posing for photographers, I think in this case their posing looks fairly natural :) and you chose a very good composition.
And an interesting Note, as always!
Warm regards,
and I wish you a nice week!

Hi Bill,
A pretty group portrait, wonderfully framed by the decorated big stone portal. The colours and clarity are great, specially taking into account the strong sun light. The partial desaturation looks very appropriate here, enhancing the sense of antiquity of the architecture and making the orange of the robes stand out.

Very good work in isolating the striking robes of these monks in front of the beautiful entrance. I guess they won't be needing wallets because I have yet to see them being IDed by the police. Hi Bill,
you achieved fantastic result by partial desaturation, a combination of BW background and colourful monks. They do create excellent graphical accent and make the whole result most effective. You probably done that to minimaze the disturbance of surroundings (hardly noticable photographer at the bottom) and i think it was a very smart choice. Still i think the best quality here is the light and its sharp appearance. It creates vibrant atmosphere and makes the whole photo despite classical composition much alive.
Best regards,
