Not so far from Caracol Cascade ,few meters far of the highway, it is located another tourist attraction of the area. The "thick pine tree", It is a huge old araucária tree. Unfortunately there was a problem about laws to protect nature and cause this the tree wasn't protected that day. Municipal government had build a wood trail to people visited the tree, the humid weather spoiled that soon and they were trying to rebuild it. Anyway nowadays the laws to protect nature in southern-Brazil are very strong and they prohibited that, then the park was closed and the tree was abandoned, nowadays tourists go there and the tree is without any protection, what it is a shame caused by burocracy who wanted to protected it and, insted of this, abandoned it.
About the tree: It is an Araucária, the most famous tree in the coldest forests of Brazil (araucaria augustifolia), this tree was very menaced and today it is a protected specie, despite we can see it in many places in Southern-Brazil, problem is genetic extinction. After so many damage it is surprising to find a big tree like this, few meters at side of a highway. I was ever thinking how it got to survive and show us its magnificence. The tree has 8,5 meters in its base 1 meter above ground level, it has 48 meters of hight and an American bothanic said it is around 700 years old. It was here and it was an old tree when first Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500. Araucária trees can be male or female, this one is a female and produces lots of seeds (pinhões), a typical food of coldest regions of Brazil. Unfortunately the view of the higer area of this tree wasn't nice cause the other trees around.

Não longe da cascata do Caracol está outra importante atração turística. É o chamado Pinheiro Grosso, uma imensa e velha araucária. Quando visitei a área havia uma disputa entre a prefeitura local e os órgãos ambientais. Havia uma velha passarela de madeira que foi carcomida pela umidade, e a prefeitura queria fazer outra, mas impediram as obras. O resultado, fecharam o parque, as pessoas entram ali, invadindo, e a árvore está totalmente desprotegida, ameaçada pela mesma burocracia que dizia protegê-la, algo semelhante ao que fazem com os menores de idade neste país.
Sobre a árvore: É uma araucária (araucária augustifolia), árvore ameaçada de extinção genética e protegida por lei, apesar de bem comum no sul brasileiro. Qualquer um que conhece uma araucária sabe como esta árvore foi severamente derrubada, fica surpreso ao ver uma velha e enorme árvore como esta aqui. Admira sua grandiosidade e fica se perguntando como ela escapou da morte e da ganância, mesmo estando a poucos metros de uma estrada. A árvore tem 8,5 metros de circunferência a um metro de altura do chão, possui 48 metros de altura e um botânico americano avaliou que ela possui cerca de 700 anos de idade. Quando Cabral aportou no Brasil esta já era uma velha árvore. As araucárias podem ser macho ou fêmea, esta aqui é uma velha garota e produz muitos pinhões, alimento típico das regiões geladas do Brasil. Infelizmente as fotos da copa da árvore não ficaram boas pois as outras árvores ao redor prejudicaram a vista.
