Photographer’s Note
This is my first stab at shooting some star trails and was taken from the same location as my last few submissions in Rawtenstall, Lancashire.
The sky was clear when I started, and I took a couple of test shots at ISO 800, f/5.6 for 30s which seemed to just about make the stars visible enough to expect to be able to get the star trail effect. I tried to compose the scene so that there was something other than the sky in the shot, so included the lights from Rawtenstall town centre and the bushes and wall in the foreground.
I then left it on continuous shoot, taking 30s exposures for about an hour whilst I went inside and watched the football!
I then converted all the shots to JPEG (having played around with the white balance) and used startrails.de to generate the merged image for the star trails using about 100 shots. I also included a single all-black exposure, as apparently this helps with the contrast.
As you can see a large cloud moved into the shot during the hour that the images were taken, so I layered the merged image on top of one of the originals in Gimp and used the eraser tool to remove any of the star trails that were crossing in front of the cloud (which looked a bit wierd and didn't make a lot of sense!).
I'm not entirely happy with the end result, not really because of the startrails themselves which have come out about as well as I expected, but I think the rest of the shot isn't really exposed that well and is lacking a bit of interest. I think I'll try a more interesting subject next time I try some star trails.
Let me know what you think!
Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon,
I really like how you composed this to include the city lights and wall at the bottom. I've been wanting to try this technique combining the multi-exposures but just haven't gotten round to it yet. Nice one.
Cheers!

Hi Simon,
I read your note with interest!! Yes star-trails are not easy. Best to use a strong ND filter of +1 or +2 and then set your camera to Iso 100 or lower if possible, your aperture at the sweet spot of your camera to get each shot at 2 minutes.
Why do you need so many shots? And why iso 800? The higher the iso, the less the exposure time, the less movement and the more noise. I'd go for lowest iso, prime aperture (f/11 - f/16) and a nice ND filter.
Thanks for the intro in startrails!!

Hi Simon,
Wow! What a great shot! The cloud makes this image unique in the way it breaks up the star trails. I love the dark purple colour of the sky and the twinkling lights below. Very good composition and interesting note.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Si,
Another great attempt. Something I have also dabbled with, but really am not that good at it. The image looks great. The lights are a tad overexposed in the city, but thats only to be expected with those exposure lengths. I didn't know that the camera could continously shoot without you there. Must look in my manual. That could be fun. You should send 'dkeus31' a note and ask him what he thinks of this.

I like much the presence of the cloud in this photograph. this is what makes it original.

A cool technique very well executed. What football game did you watch?
Nice work, PHIL

Hi Simon, I like this adventure into this star photography. I find the cloud very special making it look like a scene from a comic book science fiction, looks unreal in a very positive way. TFS, Alex
