Photographer’s Note

Old court is situated at the corner of Kralja Milana and Dragoslava Jovanovića streets, in Belgrade downtown. It once was a residency of Obrenović royal family, and today is home to Belgrade City Government.

The building was constructed according to projects of architect Aleksandar Bugarski, between 1882. and 1884. in academism architecture style of 19th century. This building is attached to important moments of Serbian history and political life. It was just finished when Serbia became Kingdom, and in this court, later, king Milan has abdicated in favor of his son king Aleksandar. From 1903. to 1914, court was residency of Karađorđević royal family. Later, after royal family moved to new court in Dedinje, it became place were National Assembly was temporarily situated, and all to 1941. host to court parties, and foreign officials audiences.

It’s interesting that court was twice devastated, first time in First world war, and second time during 6th April bombardment. After WWI, it was reconstructed, and first bigger adaptation was in 1930. Reconstruction after WWII was finished in 1947, and it resulted in big architectural changes. It lost two domes at the garden side, and front facade was completely redone. In the communist time, in this building were situated Presidium of National Assembly, Government of Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, Federal Executive Council, and from 1961. Belgrade City Government.
