Eilean Donan Castle Photo

Photographer’s Note

As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

A stunning view indeed of the castle. The wide angle has really caught an excellent moment, both of the sky and the surrounding area. What I really like is the colors and sharpness.

That's a very impressive and truly beautiful photo!
The pov was very well chosen, the composition was ably and effectively done, with awesome visual results! Sharpness is suitable to the image, exposure is correct and the pp - a bit hard - works out very nicely in this case! My opinion is, if we have the technology, why not use it?!?!
Anyway... I really enjoy it!

A great capture of this well-known and beautiful castle in Scotland. You used the path really well in the foreground and it leads the eye nicely towards the castle. The colours are fine and well saturated. Thanks for sharing!

Witam kolegę Henryka po dłuższej nieobecności! Widzę tu zamek szkocki piekny. Mocno hdr-owy. jak jest taka mozliwość, to czemu nie, ale ja wolę naturalny wygląd. Wspaniała okolica, woda z prawej i z lewej, fajna kamienna droga.

A much photographed and famous castle, but I think it is the first time I see it from this point of view!
An awesome location on that small island/peninsula, overlooking the lake...
The dramatic sky fits well the subject as I assume this place has a rather dramatic past!

A great image in this composition. The sober beauty of the castle and of the landscape that surrounds it, and the treatment that you have done in pp, they give an amazing result, the textures and the colors are magnificent, it looks like a painting.
The POV is perfect and gives a beautiful perspective of the bridge towards the castle and the sky in background.

Ja wiem że wyspiarska pogoda nie sprzyja nasyconym kolorom, jednak taki landszafcik aż się prosi o pocztówkową naturalność.
Gdybyś był łaskaw dać do WS oryginał... niechaj nacieszę oczy tym widoczkiem.

Hello Henryk,

Fabulous image of the Scottish castle, surround by the lochs. You've managed the light well, and post-processed beautifully. The monochromatic colors of the castle, are set off by the lush green grass and the trees in the distance. The sky, however, is a major asset for this shot. So, last week you were in Scotland. It must have been a most enjoyable interlude.
