Photographer’s Note
This shot shows the garish colour near Shinjuku Station on the next day when a spring storm swept the sky, which is the same day as the previous post. This time the perspective is tipically compressed by a telephoto lens.
Ricard (ricard)'s shot gave me an inspiration.
I didn't press the shutter button until the moment of a lot of passers-by crossing the road in a hurry and two trains running.
About 2,200 trains per day cross this plate girder bridge, and the average number of daily users at Shinjuku Station is 3,640,583.

hi Hisashi
This colorful shot reminds me of Kodakchrome slide and Kodak film quality. I am amazed at how you can get through upload of this 308kb size [properties of photo vs the photo info 299kb, I suppose the real size could be 299kb to get through. Some server compression after upload?] but I can see more pixels go into play for this scene.
This is superb quality and fit for a magazine cover. I have to commend equally the original photo of Ricard, but you have pursued it further and make vast improvements to the scenery and composition.
Although not as your earlier long exposures, this 1/1600s in incredibly sharp for the bright light condition, and really makes the capture able to display so much details.
The long focal length helps to compress and reduce the depth but you have used only FL100mm, which means you are quite near to the scene.
Very nice work.
tfs, bill

HI Hisashi,
Nice urban view, the extreme business of the scene gives well the feeling of a big metropolis and yep all these colors add to the overloaded impression we get from there, the may signs too.

Great shot Hisashi!
I have been through Shinjuku on numerous occasions when visiting Tokyo. I think you did a really greeat job in capturing the 'controlled chaos'. Trains, cars, people, signs, buildings- you got it all!
I would love to see this scene at night, taken with a long exposure- sure it would be amazing.
Well done!

Hello Hisashi,
Not often you are posting a photo with a telezoom ;-)
I think it was the right choice to increase the color impact of all those advise on the buildings.
I like also the use of the shadow in foreground, it increase the perception of the overall contrast of this photo.
Yves.
PS: thanks for the trick of exposure when using wide angle lens. I will do some trials to see if with my lens I will have to put the same -2/3 correction on the camera.

Hi Hisashi,
It is the ultimate cityscape. A screen full of action and details. Tight framing with tele really packs the scene. You really knew what to wait for of the pedestrians and trains.

こんにちは Masashi. This photo really conveys Shinjuku in a nutshell. Good rendering of the busy layers of traffic at the bottom, backed by the typical tall building with the colorful advertisement billboards. I can see the Yamanote Line on the bridge :). Excellent lighting rendering a very vivid - almost joyful - range of colors. Well captured. It reminds me the opening scene of the movie "Lost in Translation", when Bill Murray is arriving by Taxi in Shinjuku, looking outside the window at a scenery like this one.

A view that renders well the busy and colourful atmosphere of Tokyo at rush hour. Well composed with the two horizontal layers of the walking people and the train altenating with the vertical lines of the buildings.

Hi Hishashi,
A very very urbanised place you show here. Lots of elements, lots of colors , a jungle of concrete, crowd and vehicles on the street....all portrying a fast urban life, something which Japan is known for. I liked the order and neatnes of the city amidst the madding chaos.

Hello Hisachi
Vow! It looks pretty busy ;)
Almost same shot than Ricard but here with the addition of the road going below the bridge and a well time captured on the people crossing it. you've got for this one a better light and a bluer sky that resulted in a bright image.

Hi, Hisashi. A very colourful picture and very lively too with the trains passing and the people crossing the street. Your telephoto lens brings the buildings close to each other, which creates an ensemble of varied colours. A good picture of urban life. The figures in your note are really impressive.

Wow, this sure brings back memories...
To actually just see a scene and instantly feel that I've been there... that has to count for something.
I find the overall scene to be somewhat cluttered, but I guess that is part of what makes this photo special. Tokyo is well known to be a crowded and cluttered space.
The quality of the shot is what suprizes me. Very nice angle of the light, it really sneaks into every crevasse of the photo and light everything up beautifully.
But perhaps that is also what makes the photo slightly bad too. The light is a little unwelcome on some of the surfaces, overexposing those areas and genereally giving them some slighty negative attention.
However... overall I find the scene to be a very welcomed one, especially since I rememberthis place very good.
Thanks for sharing.

This is how I imagine Japan - the densely-packed buildings, the adverts and signs everywhere, sleek modern trains gliding along, lots of men in suits! I know that there are lots of other sides to the country, but this how I've always imagined it.
One day I must go and see for myself!
Great shot Hisashi, I like how you compressed the perspective, making the whole urban scene appear even more densely packed than it was in reality.

there's no better way to show a busy and crowded city that to use telephoto for flattened perspective, and your photo is an excellent example, I like it a lot. dazzling amound of colours and details, and crisp light is just right to bring all that in focus. great shot, my compliments.
