Photographer’s Note

4400 mètres d’altitude !J’ai enfin atteint les prairies de Tapovan, but ultime de ce voyage !Ca fait 7 jours que j’ai commencé ce trek,avec le but de finir ici,lieu de pèlerinage où ee rendent de nombreux saddhus dès la fin du mois d’avril !Oui,mais voilà,il est encore un peu tôt dans la saison,et ils n’ont pas encore entamé ce pèlerinage !Grosse déception,nous marchons seuls !Arrivés là-haut,personne !Pas un seul saddhu en vue,rien,le desert total !Seul le mont Shivling me regarde du haut de ses 6 500m.Cette montagne est sacrée,elle représente le sexe se Shiva.Le ciel commence à se couvrir,et il fait très froid.Je suis trop fatiguée pour rechercher le petit ashram dont j’ai entendu parler !
La nuit,je suis malade,je sors de la tente plusieurs fois pour vomir,et je grelotte !Peut-être est-ce l’altitude qui fait son effet !Je me sens seule au monde,je me demande ce que je suis venue faire dans cette galère,et je m’en veux de ne pas avoir eu le courage d’explorer un peu plus cet endroit !Demain matin,il faudra redescendre !
Alors que je suis en train de déjeuner,je le vois qui s’avance vers moi !Aurait-il entendu ma prière silencieuse ?Je m’avance vers lui,une partie de mon petit déjeuner à la main pour le lui offrir.
Il m’explique qu’avant,il était ingénieur,mais l’histoire est trop longue pour dire comment il s’est décidé à suivre cette voie.Il vit seul ici,même en hiver,où les températures atteignent parfois -40 degrés .Il me montre comment il médite en regardant le soleil pour mettre ce qu’il appelle sa climatisation intérieure !Impressionant !Il me demande si je veux visiter l’ashram ,ce que je m’empresse d’accepter !Il m’y offre un thé,et me montre ses photos,C’est son hobby !Certaines sont très belles !Je lui explique alors que j’aurais voulu prendre un saddhu en photo en méditation devant le mont Shivling,et il me propose de poser pour moi !C’est là qu’il a l’habitude de méditer,son tapis est déjà installé !Je me sens bien ici,et du coup,j’aurais aimé pouvoir rester 2 ou 3 jours. Mais c’est impossible,dans 4 jours je retravaille,il me faut 2 jours pour redescendre,et encore 1 jour et 1 nuit pour arriver à Delhi.
Mais j’ai trouvé ce que je voulais,je suis heureuse.

4400 meters of altitude! I finally reached the prairies of Tapovan, ultimate purpose of this trip! I have begun this trek 7 days ago, with the purpose to finish here, place of pilgrimage where return many saddhus as of the end of April! Yes, but here, it is still a little bit early in the season, and they did not start this pilgrimage yet! Large disappointment, we are walking alone! Arrived up there, nobody! Not only one saddhu in sight, nothing, the total desert! Only the Shivling mount looks at me from the top of its 6.500m.Holy mountain,it represents the Shiva’s sex.
The sky starts to be covered, and the weather is very cold. I am too much tired to seek the small ashram about which I have heard! The night, I am sick, I leave the tent several times to vomit, and I am very,very cold! Perhaps this is the altitude which makes its effect! I feel alone in the world, I wonder why I came here, and I regret not to have had courage to explore a little more this place! Tomorrow morning, it will be necessary to go down again! While I have my breakfeast, I see him advancing towards me! Would he has heard my quiet prayer? I advance towards him,a part of my breakfast in my hands to offer it to him.
He explains me that first, he was engineer, but the story is too long to say how he decided to follow this way. He lives here alone, even in winter, where the temperatures reach sometimes -40 degrees. He shows me how he meditates by looking at the sun, to put what he calls his interior air-conditioning! Impressing! He asks me if I want to visit the ashram, which I hasten to accept! He offers me a tea, and shows me its photos, It is his hobby! Some are very beautiful! I explain to him that I would have liked to photograph a saddhu in meditation in front of the Shivling mount, and he proposes me to pose for me! It is there that he is used to practice the meditatation, his carpet is already installed! I feel well here, and I would have liked to be able to stay 2 or 3 days more. But it is impossible, in 4 days I work again, it takes me 2 days to go down again, and still 1 day and 1 night to arrive at Delhi. But I have found what I wanted, I am happy.

Salut Pascale,
La silhouette du Shivling se reconnaîtrait parmi mille! C'est un peu le Cervin de l'Himalaya! Sa verticalité est véritablement impressionnante!
Malgré le lumière très dure, le cadrage est excellent et l'ambiance est à la médiation!

Bon choix de format qui ne peut qu'attirer l'attention dans la nouvelle version de TE. Un superbe cliché de ce contemplatif qui ne prete sûrement pas attention au décor superbe qui l'entoure. Quand on regarde ses yeux on pourrait presque penser qu'il est aveugle. Bref une superbe image, bravo et bonne fin de journée.

Dear Pascale,
Initially I did not have the patience to go through your note but as I read word by word by word I felt very attracted to it. Very impressive note and a welll composed shot. Just wondering (since this was a snowy shining peak)if you used any UV filter. I feel there is a bit of over exposure you cannot avoid in such conditions. So reducing the exposure value of the camera in such situations may help.

Bonjour, Pascale. J'aime beaucoup ton récit qui prouve qu'il ne faut jamais désespérer. J'aime beaucoup le parallélisme entre la position du saddhu et la forme du Shivling. La lumière est assez dure, mais je comprends que tu tenais absolument à ce cliché et que tu l'aurais fait dans toutes les conditions. Ton image illustre aussi cette façon de vivre qui nous semble tellement étrange, mais si proche de la nature.

Incroyable!!! Il n'y a qu'en Inde pour faire de telles rencontres... Je trouve ton histoire super intéressante et bien racontée. Tu étais vraiment déterminée à grimper là-haut, sans même avoir une journée-tampon pour ton retour précipité... Tu vis dangeureusement!!!

Je savais déjà à quel point tu tenais à retourner dans le nord de l'Inde, alors ça fait plaisir de voir que tu es allé au bout de tes ambitions.

Malgré les conditions difficiles, tu as ramené une photo d'une grande qualité. Ce type que tu as rencontré semble en effet habité par une dimension spirituelle plus profonde que la mienne... Et en guise de background, impossible de trouver mieux; je trouve ton sujet et l'environnement complètement en symbiose. Avec ton récit en bonus, c'est mieux que Tintin au Tibet... :-P)

What an amazing setting to be in and I can see why it would be such a good place for pilgrimige and meditation. A great shot showing him dwarfed by the huge mountain peak reminding us once again how small man is in comparison to nature. I am glad you found what you wanted.

Hello Pascale,
The journey up and down this mountains seems very difficult indeed, I admire your perseverance and stamina. Even if this is the only shot you have got I think it is still worth the effort to climb 4400m. The view of the snow capped mountain with that great character sitting on the orange and bright blue mat is extremely impressive and interesting. It is very unusual and you won't find this up in the Swiss or French Alps.

Unbelievable, prayer man in front of the mountain at high ground! And I seldom see you write such a long note!

I seldom see this kind of photo on TE too.

But I like it.

One day I should learn from him how to do meditation up there. It is good for the body and soul.

A fine capture and really superb view with good contrast. I wonder which direction he is facing? Quite incredible that you spent 7 days out of your whole trip here! But I believe this is the experience I would not miss. For the photo, just the right composition to show your best skill although I might clone out the tiny dark shadow at mid left but not really something that will affect this beautiful scenery.

Superb work. Bravo for your bold journey.

Je viens de voir le superbe portrait de cet homme mais j'aime cette photo pour ce qu'elle dégage .Même sans ta note ,on éprouve un sentiment de sérénité et en même temps on est fasciné ,du moins moi ,par ce splendide paysage .Une photo que tu as vraiment méritée et qui doit te tenir à coeur .J'aime cette touche de couleurs du tapis dans toute cette harmonie de tons clairs .

You're are very lucky for this shot and it well worth all the trouble you been through to get to this location. I know high altertude can be a major problem, when I was in Tibet, I was also very sick for a couple of days. This is wonderful image, a memory worth a life time. Salut Pascale, Great picture and even better story, you seem to travel because of taking pictures, and this is my way of travellin too. I fully understand your sadness after you climed several days and no sadhus there. I do not want to critique your wonderful pictures, you are too good, however different photographers would take the same picture in different ways. May I just share with you, how I would take this picture ? I would try to avoid the common view - from the height of eyes of a common man, I think you did knee while taking this picture to avoid the common view. I use an angle viewer, so I can go with my camera down to the ground and make the subject more domminant as it can take bigger portion of the picture and catch some details on the ground. Excuse me, I did not want to give you advices. This is a wonderful picture drawing relation between the man and the mountain. Well done. Kind regards, Michael
