Photographer’s Note

A view of the Mairie in the picturesque village of Varaignes on a hot May afternoon. Unusually, the Mairie also doubles as the post office and telephone exchange as can be seen by the multitude of overhead wires. As to the significance of the turkey, you need to read to the end of the note.

Varaignes is a French commune in the départment of Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It is located 16 kilometres north-west of the town of Nontron in the Périgord Limousin natural regional park.

It has a 16th century château, which houses a museum of local arts and crafts with an emphasis on weaving. The church of Saint-Jean Baptiste dates from the 12th century with alterations and additions made in the 13th, 15th and 19th centuries. The village is also a centre of turkey production with an annual procession and Turkey Fair held on the 11th of November each year.
