Photographer’s Note
While travelling in the White Mountains high in the Eastern Sierras of California we happened along this lonely horse. A ranger from the Ancient Bristlecone Forest reserve told us he had been on his own for about 10 years. This is very unusual for a herd animal and I can't imagine how he survives in winter. I suppose he moves to lower levels where local ranchers may help him out with hay and water.
Hmmm!! There I am at ISO 400 again. What was I thinking? Here is another version here

Aye Phil,
I feel that this lone horse is a significant find in this vastness of a mountain range. The horse appears very proud even from a distance as its head is held high and its Spirit must never be broken after all these years. A sbeautiful scene, though afar, and it is the horse that offers the scene for you to capture from afar as it does not appear to like humans in any way, or it would be on a farm or ranch, and out to pasture.

Hello Phil! Tiny horse in big landscape, yes we are small compared to what is out there, sometimes we should think about it, also when we take these adventures and start to drive with no water or enough gas. It IS the horse that makes this photo work so well, it makes it really interesting, even if it is so small compared to the rest around it. Very nice, I like it a lot. ISO400 ... I am constantly on something that I do not want to have, always a little in hurry but I see you are too :))) Have a wonderful Saturday, Barbara.

All that brown scrub foreground and the horse chose to stand on a small yellow bit. Serendipity!! He'd have been lost in the brown. A well framed image with the hill slope coming from the top corner.

Hello Phil!
An interesting contrast of colours. You chose a very good point of view. The horse seems lonely in this vaste landscape but it survives. I like the mountain on the top right too. Without the horse, although it is far away and appears small, the spirit of the picture would not be the same. Very good note! Well done!
Best regards
Denis!

Wide open spaces!! Makes me wonder if it's happy, it looks very small and alone. Good detail. TFS

Hello Phil,
The perspective is fantastic, a very rugged landscape of dry colors, which contrast with the beautiful blue sky.
The poor horse seems lost in the immensity.
Best wishes,
Charo

Hi Phil
It is really small in the frame but you're lucks it was other this small terrain part where it contrasts best, I'd cut some empty foreground to give more panoramic wide feeling to the image
Have a nice day JY

Hi Phil,
Like the lone wolf this guys is most like a male and it must be a hard life all by himself.
The horise adds very effective scale to this arid landscape.
Love how the vivid by sky contrast with the unusual desert colors.

Hello,
This horse is so small....it's really amazing. Very nice colours and a great minimal composition. I like contrast between sky and earth. Very good note.

Hello Phil!
This landscape looks empty and arid, maybe even hostile, but it's very "charming" at the same time! Simple but excellent composition, great light managment, beautiful colours! that lonely horse in the distance is a fantastic "detail"! Congratulations!

Hi Phil,
Intriguing image bringing out the desolate area of the Highway 395 corridor. The infinity of vegetation leads the eye into the distant hills, mountains.
One may go west deeper into the Sierra Nevada from Big Pine on a oneway road stopping at a campground with an excellent hiking trail along Big Pine Creek and waterfalls.
Thanks for sharing,
Ray
PS: There are many wild horses and burros in the West, they forage on natural grasses and watering holes.

Hi Phil,
Nice framing with the sweep of the hillside against the blue sky while the mountain peeking up provides nice balance for the horse.
Don't you HATE it when the ISO is wrong? Still sometimes resetting the white balance in Raw is very effective.

Hi Phil. The rogue elephant, the lone wolf and now the horse all alone. I suppose animals are no different from us as we too have the loners. The horses tiny size accentuates its solitude in this vast landscape.Hope you are well.Regards. Klaudio.
