Photographer’s Note
The Kiel Canal based on the idea of connecting the Baltic with the North Sea by a water-route which would avoid the dangerous voyage round the peninsula of Jutland was built on territory torn from Denmark in 1864 and was constructed largely for military and naval purposes. It is today the busiest artificial waterway in the world and is also known for its interesting bridges, which come in all sizes and shapes. 10 bridges, 14 ferries and a tunnel link the roads and rails leading through Schleswig-Holstein that is in fact cut by the canal. Here you can see the “iron lady”, a magnificent railway bridge, which is the landmark of Rendsburg, a town that benefits a lot from being located at the canal. The train - on the way to Denmark - is coming from Southern Germany. The bridge supports a hanging ferry (!), which crosses the canal suspended on cables. It carries cars as well as people.
As already mentioned before the canal is also a very popular cruise destination. While the largest, modern cruise ships unfortunalety cannot pass through this canal due to clearance limits under bridges, here the small, old fashioned cruise ship Adriana is heading towards Kiel. United Shipping Yard, Perama, built Adriana in 1972 for use by Hellenic Mediterranean Lines. Now she is sailing the Baltic Sea. Baltic cruises including a passage through the Kiel-Canal are very accepted itineraries. And cruise ship spotting is a pleasure for people living near the canal (like me!). When a cruise ship enters the Kiel Canal, groups of people are often lining both sides of the canal waving and taking pictures. In return, the captain sounds the horn twice, and that means there is a lot of noise! My area revolves so much around water and maritime that people actually have a calendar of when each ship will come through so we can welcome them in – but unfortunately these ships never arrive in time!

Bonjour Harriet
Un bon cliché de ce bâteau tout blanc qui donne l'impression qu'il aura du mal à passer sous le pont. Une juxtaposition amusant du bâteau et du train sur le pont.
Merci pour le partage et bon week-end.

HI Harriet
There is a bit of overlapping of the elements but the exposure on the white structures is excellent
Have a nice day jY

Hello Harriet,
I agree with Jean Yves about the overlapping elements. Perhaps the timing should have been a bit different. But according to the title (heavy traffic) the traffic is really too heavy for one little spot! LOL
I bet you wanted to capture both the boat the the train above - passing at the same time? In this case it's difficult to find the right moment!
I like the soft light in this image. Anyway, I would suggest sharpening the photo a tiny bit :)
Warm greetings from Moscow,
Elena

Hello Harriet,
I think that this image is well composed, the big boat is an eye-catcher so as the red train passing above.
It's a very strange situation that you catched with a perfect timing.
Friendly regards

Hi Harriet, what an interesting note! indeed, we see quite a lot of traffic here. The cruise on the adriana must be very pleasant. Perfevt timing of the train going on the bridge. And the hanging ferry - it is something incredible. Nice coft colours.

Hi Harriet.
Same title as one of my UK canal shots! Nicely timed picture of this crossing of the ways by ship and train. I have something similar on a much smaller scale in my collection from the UK; maybe this will inspire me to upload it. Your note as usual is superb in imparting your knowledge. The bridge is impressive looking. I love the sight of a train on a grand bridge like this. It's the first such hanging ferry I have seen - good to see you took the shot before it was obscured by the ship!
Maybe this shot could do with a little more contrast and sharpening - just a suggestion!

Andrew

Hello Harriet,
Would you believe we had some friends staying with us for the weekend and they have travelled on the Adriana, how small is this world.
Boats, trains and automobiles, you have them all in this nicely composed image.
If only the hanging ferry had been suspended over the water in front of the boat...ah, wishful thinking.
I like this very much Harriet, tfs. I loved your note too, in fact I always enjoy your notes.

Hello Harriet,
This boat bears the name of a famous wife of player of foot to France… Adriana Karembeu… Indeed river and railway traffic intense !!! Cruising on this river must be quite pleasant I think. As Andrew (Macondo) suggests it, I am allowed a WS, I hope that you will like.
With all my friendships and very good Sunday, under the greyness here in Versailles…

Hello Harriet,
Interesting notes, as always.
I have learned a lot about this area of Europe since you began posting on TE.
I quite like the different examples of traffic creating one main focal area and I find that they relate to oneanother well. They certainly fulfil the title!
You have managed the light well but, IMO, the shot would benefit from a little more sharpening.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Harriet,
I really like the fact that you managed to include both a boat and a red train in the same capture. This is also a remarkable bridge with a good architectural value.

Hello Harriet,
Three means of communication all in one picture isn't bad. Even better when it's a question of such technical and natural beauty as in this one. A bit more contrast and sharpness would have given the photo even more brilliance, but it's very good even now. And the note is as always well written and interesting.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Harriet,
very pretty composition.
I like the idea of including both ships and train.
I believe I may have been there by myself as I traveled to Kiel from Luebeck, but also I went from Hamburg to Sylt. In this second trip I remember exactly crossing the channel. That was a very interesting place: the bridge was very high above the land as I see it here.
Very nice and interesting presentation,
TFS

Hello Harriet,
I don't mint travel with travel with train, but having the choice I prefer boat! In particular I'd like to travel around Indonesia in an old steamer hahaha, but I'm afraid those days are long gone...
The Adriana here seems to be a fine old ship, nicely
presented in this well composed image!

Hi Harriet,
Magnificient combination of a classic passenger ship, huge bridge and a train crossing it. It's good that sky is darkish providing a good background for the white ship. That bridge is a marvel of engineering and for me might be enough of reason to visit the region.

Hello Harriet,
As already noted, you have had an excellent timing in having both the train and the cruise ship in the same photo. I have never seen a hanging ferry! An impressive bridge. Thanks for an excellent note too. I agree on the contrast and sharpness thing with some others, but the photo is attractive anyway. TFS!

Harriet, small old fashioned maybe but beautiful for sure. When I think of the sea I do not think of the massive hoards that travel in close quarters on the cruise ships of today and the Adriana looks more up my alley. Fine color and detail as in all your work and the note is great as well. Superb post.

These transporter bridges are fairly unique, but we have one near where I live. It often is closed because of high winds. The image is very clear and sharp, although a bit crowded in the middle. It's not easy to get the timing right on moving objects.

Hi Harriet,
Congratulations on your 200th TE post and what a fine image you have chosen for the occasion.
Love the blue and white Adriana II and the fine figure it cuts as it barely clears the old bridge.
Excellent colors, sharpness and details to this fine coastal view that goes well with your informative note.

Hallo Harriet!
Toll, wirklich toll.

dear Harriet,
an impressive shot of wonderful view. the crossing timing is nice.
the composition of boat, train, hanging ferry, and bridge is very unique and interesting.
and the contrast between red train and blue/white boat is vivid.
of course back green trees and rich water make a nice stage for these means of transportation.
plus, this figure of bridge is so original.
thank you for your excellent shot,

Hello Harriet
Hope you had a fine vacation! Very interesting picture from the Kiel canal. I might have wished that you clicked the shutter a minute earlier to avoid the juxtaposition with the barge in the BG. Exposure is fine, especially on the white ship. As always a fascinating note which I enjoyed reading!

Hi Harriet!
Great capture and composition of the "Iron Princess" which you caught in good time to include both the train, the cruise ship and the ferry!
The contrast in colours is also very effective, with the bright white of the ship against the grey of the bridge, enlightened by the red train!
Congratulations!

Bonjour Harriet.
Belle composition où la légèreté du pont métallique rivalise avec la beauté des formes du bateau !
C'est une image très paisible d'un coin qui a connu bien des conflits.
Bonne journée !
