Background
I came to this location the first and second evening of my stay in Easter Island, but I could not get a nice light for the photo. But since this place is very near Hanga Roa, I was able to even come a third time (my wife had great patience) and took this one. We were booked to a typical dinner at this time, so I could not stay later than the sunset. Anyway, this session was good enough: I took my shot and I kept my wife happy with a nice dinner :-)

What an incredible site! Yes the silhouetted 'statues' look beautiful and stand out perfectly against the cloudy and colored sky!

the great sunset adds to the beauty of the place and gives a mystic side. The backlighting allows to draw the well known silouettes, especially he one, alone in the sun.

Hell Jorge -

I am not a big fan of silhouettes but you have done a wonderful job with this one. I like the clouds and the light reflecting off the rims of the clouds as well as the sun rays. I am not sure where your focus point was but the tiki's look a bit soft IMO.

I have been to Easter Island a few years ago and I remember being there during one of our visits. We also went for a traditional dinner, were the food was cooked in a fire on the ground and we had a cultural dance show before sunset.
I love your shot where the silhouettes are beautiful. Well done.

Too bad Easter Island is so far away because I would certainly like to go and witness such a beautiful sunset. These monumental statues seem to be contemplating the beauty that surrounds them. The Rapanui people were certainly great artists. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jorge,

Interesting and relevant picture with the protest of inhabitants against too much tourist.
So you were one of the 50.000 last year. Many years ago some of these statue were washed ashore in Zandvoort-Holland, but it was a 1 April joke.

Fantastic shot, Beautiful sunset colors, perfect cloud formation to let the sun's ray radiating through them that adds so much dramatic effect to the image. And of course your composition is spot on, using one of these famous statues to block out the excessive light and also to serve as a major point of interest to anchor our vision and draw us in, and using the others for the complementary point of interest. This is a well crafted composition taken with superb technical skill. It takes times and lot of patience and I am thankful to your wife for being very supportive, we all know how time don’t really move when we not the one who is doing the photographing, just standing there and waiting.

me again :)
two things I would have changed - got on my knees to place the statues directly against the perfect sky, and cloned out the half of the ship. I might have changed my mind about the first thing, but that ship is a little distracting. other than that this is great, especially the rays of sun that you have placed very well in the frame, the composition certainly contributes to the mystery of the place. great shot, my compliments.
