Photographer’s Note

Humpback whale - its Latin name is "Megaptera novaeangliae", that means "big wings" (mega = big ; pteros = wings), the name comes after its long pectoral fins. Adults like the one in my pic range in length from 12–16 metres (39–52 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lbs).I took this pic during a breathtaking whale watching in BC, we couldn't move any closer to this wonderful creature just because of its behaviour that day. This kind of "jump" you can see here is called "breaching". A breach is a genuine jump with an intent to clear the water, but there are many different interpretations about this behaviour, just because studies on whales have been always very difficult and we still don't know many things about these mammals. I took this pic while our zodiac was moving, the choice of 18-105 lens was quite good to me because I didn't know the exact moment and where the whale would have breached, so I just had to crop the frame a little.

La megattera è chiamata così a causa delle sue lunghe pinne pettorali (mega=grandi ; pteros=ali). La lunghezza di un esemplare adulto può raggiungere i 16 metri ed il peso circa 36.000 kg. Questo comportamento è detto "breaching", le motivazioni per cui le balene ed in particolare le megattere lo facciano non è ancora molto chiaro. Secondo alcuni studiosi il "salto" servirebbe a concentrare meglio i nutrienti sospesi nell'acqua, secondo altri si tratterebbe di un gioco e ci sono molte altre interpretazioni, tutte plausibili. Ho scattato la foto dal gommone con il mio 18-105, credo non potevo fare di meglio, anche perchè in Canada è vietato avvicinarsi a meno di 100 m. dagli animali (anche per ovvie ragioni, come si può vedere qui). L'utilizzo di questo zoom con la D90 è stato comunque valido secondo me, anche perchè mi era impossibile prevedere dove e quando la balena sarebbe saltata, quindi ho tagliato un po' il fotogramma ed inserito un po' di sfondo (nonostante la giornata piovosa). Wow, fantastica. Non solo hai beccato il momento perfetto, ma anche l'immagine e' ben composta. Forse hai dovuto ingrandire un po', ma il risultato e'veramente speciale. Bellissimo lo sfondo nebbioso.

Very nice shot of the jumping whale.
It is a foggy one with only some contours of the island and the mountains but it also gives extra attention to the whale.
Well composed, even though you had to decide and shoot in a split second.

Non capisco perché ti scusi per la foto, certo si poteva fare di meglio, ma di solito bisogna anche farlo di mestiere. L'incontro, per un turista, penso sia di quelli che non si dimenticano, da parte mia complimenti, e anche un pizzico di invidia, ma è peccato.. :)

Megapteres are ones of my favorite animal and I am very happy to see this photo showing the action and the environment of the shot.
I never had the luck to see such scene but I wish it will be the case on day.

Ti invidio . Anche perchè sono stata anch'io in BC ed anche in altri posti famosi per le balene e vari cetacei ma non ne ho mai visto uno, tanto meno fotografato.

Ciao Rikk. Credo ci sia gente, del mestiere,che venderebbe l'anima al diavolo per avere una possibilità come questa. Tra l'altro la gestione dello spazio è notevole e la nebbia accresce l'atmosfera del momento.

Magnifica. Un soggetto così non ha bisogno di parametri tecnici elevatissimi (saturazione, sharpness etc.), basta un bel taglio dell'immagine come questo che gli hai dato tu.

Ciao Rikk! A great moment for you, I bet it was. Fantastic picture, such a unique shot with the whale coming out of the water. I also like the mist covered landscape in the back, it makes it even more mysterious. I tell you a funny story, we did a whale tour once in Nova Scotia. We were out for hours without any luck and slowly but slowly most became a little bored. The boat owner felt sorry for us and began to tell us stories that nobody really cared for. Slowly most became sea sick and the diesel did not help much to make us feel better :))) but I still have to smile how we drove over the water, staring at the horizon if we could see something. Years later I was more lucky and it was one of THESE moments you do not want to miss out. Most were almost in tears. Great photo, Rikk, really nice. Have a great evening, Barbara.

Yeah! Nice breach!
I can't lie to you, I am a big fan of whales! I love those creatures... They can be so gentle and quiet as giant wild animals!
In the island I live I've never had the chance to see one breach, but i'll keep looking!
Ok, about the photo...
I know the conditions weren't the best but I like the composition and to me it's a very good catch!
