Photographer’s Note
Melbourne is Australia’s southernmost mainland capital city, and as a result its seasons are perhaps the most distinct of the major cities. Sydney and Brisbane have progressively warmer climates and hence the changing of the leaves is not so obvious. Note that in this photo the native Eucalyptus tree on the left has kept all of its leaves (evergreen), and the non-native tree above (probably a camphor laurel or elm) has lost all the leaves. On this day the air temperature was about 10C (50F) which is typical winter weather in Melbourne, but the city did break 46C (115F) in February this year around the times of the disastrous bush fires. This view is looking back towards the CBD from Alexandra Parklands, an inner city garden retreat.

Excellent composition. I really like the big branch filling up the space over the blue sky. You have here a superb exposure and beautiful colours. Well done.

Hi Matthew!
I like smart colours in this compo, I like town buildings framed by green grass and a long dramatic branch.
Beautiful place!

Hi Matt, Well framed and excellent view of Melbourne from this parkland. Really interesting notes which describe this fine city well. I lived here for 15 years before transfer to Sydney. This image shows some good architecture. TFS. Murray.

Hi Matthew
Keep 'em coming! If I had to leave Brisbane for whatever reason, I think I'd choose Melbourne over Sydney. The winters there are nothing, compared with South Korea, which was quite a rude shock for me (-17c every morning & it snowed 9 times last winter. it was still snowing in early March! The record minimum in Seoul is -25c (2001). Charlotte Pass in Kosciosko NP hit -23c, & that's Australia's official lowest record minimum temperature.

Hi Matt, this is a great advertisement for Melbourne at any season. The sun is actually shining! Quick, I must show this photo to Peter Wall who doesn't believe there's a sun in Victoria. The image is beautifully composed, nice and sharp, crisp DOF, great colours and I like the tree forming a natural frame at the top. TFS and have a great week, Lisa.

Hi Matt,
A good idea to feature the big branch in the upper half of the photo, with its interesting textures. Have you considered distorting the image to straighten up the buildings on the right? The wide angle view tends to increase the parallax effect.
By the way, 10C is pretty cold even for Melbourne in July, unless that was the temperature early in the morning.
Vince.
