World Animal Day is celebrated each year on 4 October.

Each species of animals is a miracle and one link in the chain of life.
As we are at the top of this chain, we ought to be careful of handling its integrity.
It is useful to know the characteristics and the frailties of the animals compared to the human nature.


CHLOROCEBUS AETHIOPS SAVANNAH MONKEY

Distribution: West to N. East Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia, South to South Africa.

Food: Omnivorous, mainly fruit, also vegetable matter, insects and sometimes small mammals and birds.

Data: They live in groups ranging from 10 and up to 150 individuals in bush and savannah country. As they drink water constantly during the dry season, their habitat is always near water supplies. They spend a great part of their time on the ground foraging for food and are also good swimmers.They are highly social animals and groups comprise males and females within an established social hierarchy, with some dominant males.Their resemblance to man in characteristics such as the nervous system, reproduction systems and susceptibility to certain parasites, make them very interesting for biological studies. The species is being threatened by continuous deforestation and destruction of their natural habitat.

ΚΕΡΚΟΠΙΘΗΚΟΣ ΑΙΘΙΟΠΙΑΣ

Προέλευση: Δυτική ως Β. Ανατολική Αφρική, από την Σενεγάλη ως την Αιθιοπία, Ν. ως την Νότια Αφρική.

Διατροφή: Παμφάγος, κυρίως φρούτα, επίσης φυτικές ουσίες, έντομα και μερικές φορές μικρά θηλαστικά και πουλιά.

Πληροφορίες: Ζει σε ομάδες που κυμαίνονται από 10 ως 150 άτομα σε θαμνώδεις περιοχές και σαβάνες. Κατά την εποχή της ξηρασίας πίνει πολύ νερό, γι' αυτό τον συναντάμε πάντα κοντά σε πηγές νερού. Περνά αρκετό από το χρόνο του στο έδαφος καθώς αναζητά τροφή και είναι επίσης πολύ καλός κολυμβητής.Οι Κερκοπίθηκοι της Αιθιοπίας είναι ιδιαίτερα κοινωνικά ζώα και οι ομάδες τους αποτελούνται από αρσενικά και θηλυκά τα οποία συνυπάρχουν κάτω από μια καθιερωμένη κοινωνική ιεραρχία με μερικά κυρίαρχα αρσενικά.Η ομοιότητά τους με τον άνθρωπο σε κάποια χαρακτηριστικά όπως το νευρικό σύστημα, το σύστημα αναπαραγωγής και η ευαισθησία τους σε ορισμένα παράσιτα, τους καθιστά πολύ ενδιαφέροντες για βιολογική μελέτη.Το είδος απειλείται εξαιτίας της εκτεταμένης αποψίλωσης των δασών και της καταστροφής του φυσικού βιότοπού του.
