Photographer’s Note

The economy of the Indus-Saraswati civilizaion was based on agriculture. Centred around major rivers, e.g. Sutlej, Ravi, Indus, the riverine soil was fertile, facilitating the generation of a surplus to local requirements. The waterways enabled a ready distribution of this surplus which could then be used in trade. It is likely that centralized local governments, based in Harappa and Mohendojaro, combined both the secular and religious in their administration.
